Ouch!

I seriously hope this is a wake up call for future superhero (Xmen, Ironman, Thor, Captain America, Avengers etc) movies and stop making boring, overlong, bloated, cliched, meaningless pieces of crap).

At least Antman and Deadpool tried to break this mould.

BATMAN vs SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE DOG (151 minutes) M

Heaven help us. Here's another piece of superhero crap that is so inexcusably bad you'll think you've died and gone to movie hell.

The film pits Batman (Ben Affleck) and babbling corporate bad guy Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) against Superman (Henry Cavill).

They see him as an almighty alien threatening the future of civilisation, while he sees himself as an icon of justice fulfilling the public duty bestowed upon him by his loving foster parents (Kevin Costner, Diane Lane).

To be fair, the opening stretch of the film actually does a good job setting up this three-sided conflict, with a lot of neat sidebar discussions about whether Superman is somebody people actually want fighting their fights for them.

But then, lo, comes the film's "big revelations" and, right before your eyes, you see what could have been a terrific entry into the superhero franchise totally collapse into the usual swirl of superhero franchise cliches.

One could be forgiven for thinking there is a default software package somewhere that filmmakers go to when they run out of ideas. The final battle here looks precisely like every other superhero movie climax: there are monsters; giant energy bolts; huge fireballs; brooding skies; the crushing of buildings; and, of course, rubble. Loads and loads of rubble.

It's hard to imagine a big-budget film worse than Avengers: Age of Ultron or even Gods of Egypt - there, it's been said - but Batman vs Superman has the dubious distinction of showing utter contempt for its audience, and wearing that contempt on its sleeve as if it was a badge of honour.

This is brazenly demonstrated through Superman's completely back-asswards relatonship to kryptonite. Did director Zack Snyder really think he would get away with it? That nobody would notice?

Scratching the bottom of the barrell for fresh ideas is one thing, but what occurs in Batman vs Superman is the filmmakers scratching right through the barrell and hitting the floor below.

The film's messy resolution also signals a shift of emphasis for the DC Comic universe. Till now, with the Batman films, the brand was seen as holding the higher moral ground compared to Marvel's more low-brow style.

Well, they've surrendered that now, along with their concern for the legacy of their superheroes.

Now I know why I liked it. Because schembri didn't.

My only issue was the length. 2.5 hrs seem de rigeur these days, which is a bit self-indulgent. Otherwise, a rollicking film.

Batman vs Superman...

It's an odd feeling being an hour into a movie about the epic battle between two iconic legends of superhero mythology, and not have seen them together on screen yet. It's even more odd to be an hour and a half into that movie before they start fighting. And it's downright bothersome when they stop fighting three minutes later. The lows: Acting, script, plot, dialogue, action scenes. The highs: the opening credits, cause they're well shot, the closing credits cause it was over.

The plot, dialogue and ten year old boy logic of the main characters can best be described as follows.

Superman: "I am strong, but sad because people don't like me. It's probably Batman's fault for reasons."

Batman: "Grrr, I hate you Superman for reasons. I will spend two years hunting you."

Superman: "You'll never beat me! Oh sh!t, you're beating me, my mum's name is Martha!"

Batman: "Wait, your mum's name is my mum's name? Now we're best friends forever!"

Wonderwoman: "Also me!"

Lex Luthor: "Nib bib nin nin nin Nib nin."

Zack Snyder: "Hey guys, can we shoot that one again? Needs more shaky cam and lens flare."

There were also the valid questions I heard Audience members around me asking throughout the movie, such as:

"Why does Superman hate Batman? "
"Why does Lex luthor hate everyone?"
"Why is every action scene a dream sequence? "
"Why is every action scene terrible?"
"Why does everything keep blowing up?
"Why does Batman hate Superman?"
"Why does Batman like Superman now?"
"Why does wonder woman's shield protect her legs when she holds it in front of her face? "
" Why is wonder woman in this movie?"
"Why is Lex luthor making the crazy frog noise for two minutes?"
"What just happened for the last two and a half hours?"
"Can we go yet? "

By the way, the answer to all of those questions is a comprehensive, "*smile*ed if I know."

Incidentally, that's the same thing it says on every line of the script in the section marked 'dialogue'.

:hihi :clap

Just watched Stranger than Fiction for the third time. Still one of my fave's. And I can't stand Will Ferrell in anything but this film.

Yep, saw the Jungle Book as well today. As someone who used to be able to recite the entire Disney animation word for word, lyric for lyric (I blame the drugs), I thought this was pretty good.

Bill Murray as Baloo was perfect.

Watched 99 Homes last night. Enjoyed it, been looking forward to it. Michael Shannon underrated and always good.

Did have a weak ending though.

Watched The Lobster on Foxtel last night.

Seen some weird movies in my time, and that one is up there ...

Almost worth it for the scene where the hotel manager duets 'Something's gotten hold of my heart'

Took the kids to see the Jungle Book too and thought it was really made well.

Watched Bad Neighbours 2 last night, enjoyed the first one and thought the 2nd was as good. Some very funny parts and I'm not usually a massive Seth Rogen fan.

Seth Rogen to me is like that mate of your mate's who is sometimes fun to hang out with put the rest of the time you want to punch him in the face. Why are his characters always yelling at their friends?

;D Its a fair point but its still a funny movie. If you want to watch something and not think too much I'd recommend it.

Am hoping the new X Men film bombs spectacularly.
Saw the last overhyped Capt America movie and couldn't stop yawning.
Unoriginal fusion crapola.
So over this superhero genre.
Somebody do us a favour - blow it up already & generate some fresh ideas.

Angry Birds movie. Obviously they knew it sucked so they loaded it with pop culture / meme references throughout. Daft Punk the The Shining are the two I remember before falling asleep.

Don't think the kids enjoyed it too much because they didn't ask me when I could download it so they could watch again.
