Movies

Saw Sweeney Todd, last Friday night.

Wonderful film if you're up to all the throat slashing and blood gushing & singing.
The costumes and sets are very reminiscent of the old style musical dramas of the late 60s such as Oliver & My Fair Lady. The soundtrack & songs are composed by Steven Sondheim of West Side Story fame.

Note this film is a musical drama - alot of singing!

Both Johnny Depp & Helena Bonham-Carter are excellent. Also, look out for an appearance by Sascha Baron Cohen ( Ali G.)

Can't wait for the musical version of the Holocaust - if Springtime for Hitler was a hit,
Springtime At Auschwitz should be a triumph!!

Any Tropfest fans here?

Just found out my brother in law made the top 16 films for this year's festival and watched his short flick last night called 'Made in Australia'.

Yeah I'm proud of him! :fing32

I sat through about 5 minutes of this garbaage before giving up. We must have differing tastes there Phant.

Interesting set of films for Burton. Probably his hype hasn't really matched his output. Thought POTA was rubbish too.

No one could accuse Burton of making mainstream films.
If you go see one of his films, you must expect the expected.

(That sounds like a queue for Monty Python, "No one expects the Inquisition!"

Batman, Edward Scissorhands & Beetlejuice hold up pretty well I thought.

They were all early on NYT, do you think the general trend of the quality of his films is holding or going downwards?

Going down at a rate of knots.

It's definitely downhill jb, but I think it has more to do with the film's subject. Visually, I don't think many come better, which to me made POTA so disappointing.

Big Fish is supposedly good - I haven't seen it.

It's really good. One of those movies that sneaks under your guard - a bit out of left field. I've watched it a few times now.

On the contrary I think he has had very rich subject matter to work with.
Not only did I hate POTA but I wasn't a fan of Willy Wonka either which again had the potential to be brilliant as a remake.

I think Burton is stuck in a time warp and unlike other modern directors has failed to truly embrace the wonders modern technology can bring to film.
That's been disappointing given his strong background in animation.
He's not at all comfortable with computer graphics and still thinks like he's at art school doing stop motion films.

IMHO TB's now old skool where as 20yrs ago he was once cutting edge (as per those early films you mentioned).

No doubt he's done some nice stuff & yes he's capable of occasional & unique brilliance but overall his films are patchy.

Apparently he's doing Alice in Wonderland next year. I guess we can expect Johnny Depp as Alice in a breakout role. :blah

Bring on the new breed and put this guy out to pasture. :blah

Forgot about Willy Wonka, which was OK (pretty much sums up his career).

Lucky movies are considered an art - I like his style...
