This new standard isn't just a new norm, it's a stepping stone to an even higher standard in the coming years.

All we can do is adapt and master safer techniques as quickly as possible. The sooner it feels natural, the less suspensions we'll get. This isn't the end point for concussion-related changes to penalties.

Ch 7 says Broady got 4 weeks, AFL website still going around in circles....
Of course. Channel 7 pays the AFL for the rights to match broadcasts and lots of exclusive breaking news. No way the AFL are gunna put the shekels at risk.

I'll believe that only if we get to the end of the season and not 1 player who's actions lead to a concussion is rubbed out for less than 4 weeks.

I don't think that will happen.

Here lies the difficulty.
When TWO players are involved in a high intensity physical struggle how is one player supposed to control the outcome?
Everyone expects the player to be stopped from running away or disposing of the footy.....
No player now is surely deliberately trying to hurt. It largely comes down to luck.

Broad can't claim that he was unlucky. He could control the outcome of that tackle, and chose poorly

Yeah. A heap of variables. Big and obvious one here is the difference between the tackle-ee. A big tough powerful gnarley old experienced champ v a skinny rookie. It takes years to get a hardened body and skills in how to fall or be tackled. Thats just an observation. Remember a few years back Niknat was done for a tackle that knocked out a small player? The league made up a new ad-hoc policy that players, if you applied the logic, had to tackle on a sliding scale of force according to size and experience of the player they tackle, gentle on a small rookie, go hard on a seasoned inside veteran.

Did the AFL ever issue any explicit directives or policy changes regarding sling tackle sanctions, particularly in regard to if no injury to tackled player? Serious question. If they did, I missed it, it just seems to be a 'more talk and concern around concussion' vibe rather than actual official guidelines.

In principle, I think the above is an improvement. It seems to me, and I think it will change from here on, a sling tackle was still usually just a free kick unless injury occurred. For example Degoey's again on Meek in a practice match. This should be the norm, and would be an improvement, 1 or 2 for any sling tackle, and more for injury, seems reasonable to me. All we ever want is consistency.

Rohan Connelly made an observation that big superstars never seem to be 'test cases'. The Niknat case above goes against that, but I think in general he has a point.

Yep. All weve ever been saying

Is give consistency a chance.

Further,

If concussion = 2-3 weeks loading where an offence occurs,

Whats to stop a team doc ticking 'fail' on the concussion test,

To take a star out of finals calculations?

Lets say tom stewart slings jack ross in a q final

We tell jack to wobble off, fail the test, sub him off,

Stewart gets 4 and misses the GF.

Does an independent doctor examine concussed players?

AFL dont seem to workshop loopholes, they just change rules when theyre exploited

DeKonning gets Stanley with a knee to the ribs No free No report till the Salty Pussies ask/complain to AFL to clarify if jumping with knees up in ruck contest is ok
AFL MRP fines DeKonning which in turn is overturned as it’s a natural football action with eyes firmly on the ball
AFL got NFI making it up as it goes along

If it was Pickett there’s no way it would have been overturned

Bizarre. Claims he was blocked trying to get to Jones who was behind him, but the players he struck were in front of him!!

Looks pretty intentional from the vision below. Staring straight at Guelfi as he elbows him to the head.

It wasn't hard, I'll give him that, but Soldo was suspended for defending himself a few years ago, Pickett was suspended because his clumsy attempt to spoil had the "potential to cause serious injury". Not sure how many times the tribunal have been elbowed to the head but I'd assume that would have a fairly high "potential to cause injury".

Geelong's current Dr is Dr David Long, who was formerly a world class critical and emergency specialist. He would have saved more lives than any other Dr is VFL/AFL history I'd expect.

I reckon his integrity would be ok.
Just shows anyone is capable of reaching the bottom, no matter how high they might fly.
