1. We lack on-field leaders, someone that will say "follow my lead" and actually show his team mates how its done. We need someone that will not be in awe of our senior players but rather will challenge them for that "top dog" spot and not fall into line like a little kid (i.e.Deledio, Tambling).

2. "Keepings off footy" as played in the first quarter will not win you many games of football. Football is a game of toughness and skill, both ingredients are required by each player in the team.

Unfortunately BftG Richmond has players who are tough and players who are skilled, but not in the one package and there are far too many on the list who have neither attribute.

newman playing well but doesn't come across as a natural leader

foley i think is the ONLY bloke in team that you could consider so sort of natural leadership abilities

geelong have 22 of them almost every week - therein lies our problem

Geelong aren't that good.

Take their top 2 guys out like WCE lost Judd and Cousins and watch Geelong go down hill.

Suddenly their fowards don't have it as easy and their backmen have too much work.

Blokes like Scarlett Johnson and Mooney would be spitting the dummy everywhere

We lack the "two WORKS":

* TEAMWORK (shepherding, tackling in gangs, protecting the ball carrier. Anyone watching "On the couch" last night would have seen Healy's video of Ling running in and blocking Pendlbury so Bartel could get the ball...imagine us doing that? Yeah right! :-\).

* HARD WORK (running hard into space to provide the ball carrier with an option, running forward to help keep the ball in the forward-50, running back to help the defence when we haven't got the ball)

These to me are the 2 ingrediants that separate us from many of the other teams out there.

No they seem crap to me. Those 4 games they have lost in the last 50 (or whatever it is) shows their vulnerability.

No 2 is the core for me Livers, I only get to see a few games live, most on the TV and when you see the player with the ball stop and prop, or take a mark and spend the next 10 seconds looking for someone to kick to, you know that there is nobody presenting and I can't understand why the coaches don't fix it. You can still have Wallace's run and carry and have players up the field presenting. It's not rocket science.

tigers4eva,
Yeah mate....what you miss on TV is that the players up the field are jogging around in little circles, more or less feigning presenting themselves, with their opposition number less than 5 metres away.
A kick to them would result in a contested ball which is obviously against most teams gameplans these days.
And after you see on TV the player with the ball waste his 10 seconds looking for someone to kick to, then the next resort is "bang it to Richo with 5 players on him". ::)

Absolutely agree. These are the things that really stand out when we are playing at our best, and go missing when at our worst.

Why I understood it the first time. You incorrectly think that Geelong would fold without their two top players. Teams dont have records like Geelong has had over the last 3 years unless you have excellent depth. Geelong could rotate 7 or 8 players through their midfield who would be the equal or even better than our best 2 midfielders.

Another goal Liverpool. Who can fix it?

Has to start with the coach.
* He has to have a clear and definite gameplan.
* He has to draft players to fulfil his gameplan
* Drop players who are not adhering to the gameplan

The players need to :
* Get fit so they can fulfil the gameplan
* Bulk up to fulfil the gameplan (which will happen naturally if the correct players are drafted instead of dweebs)
* Be self-motivated to play each week

Thats just a broad off the top of my head draft of how it could be changed.

Agree that we lack natural leaders, or at least players who look comfortable leading. But we have a player with arguably the best leadership skills in the AFL on our list in Ben Cousins. Hopefully it can rub off on some of the others.

Good in theory but there has to be something else. We've had many coaches since the early 80s and we've had virtually no success in all that time. Has every coach we've recruited over that time been unable to implement the plan? It must be cultural.

I think the closest we got was Northey.
He seemed to have a basic gameplan that suited the players and if it wasn't for injuries in that season to key forwards, we may have gone all the way (or at least made a Grand Final).

The coaches we have had though, especially over the last 10+ years have come from rotten stock, if you ask me.
There is another thread on here bagging Campbell from coaching due to his mediocrity, but you tell me....apart from Walls coaching a premiership team in the late 80s that even your grandma could have coached to a flag...what coaches have we had that have been top-line coaches?

We simply haven't had any.

We've had mediocre coaches who have tried to implment short-term and quick fix answers to a problem that has been brewing for years.

I really thought that Wallace would be hungry and having a 5 year contract with a board pleading to everyone that they were going to be stable and give Wallace his 5 years, then we may have been able to turn it around.
However, all I heard is spin and excuses...a team that doesn't suit the gameplan....and I look at us now, and wonder what a waste of 5 years because I can't see us being much better than when he took over, to be honest.

We have lack of rucks....no tall forwards coming through that show much....and skinny unskilled backmen.

We are putting SO much faith in a handful of youngsters like Cotchin, Lids, and Vickery....

If this is all "cultural" then the only way I can see that changing is getting someone with experience (easier said than done mind you)....giving them 5 years again...and telling them to start again.
Keep a handful of players that are the future...and anyone else over 26 years of age can go.

Like I said on another thread.....Melbourne will cop some hidings this year and next year...but if they hang on with Bailey, in about 3-5 years they will be making the finals while we contemplate our zillionth "rebuilding and 5 year plan" :-\
