I know it’s a pretty grim morning for all Tigers Supporters with the loss yesterday and the Polak news, but how did people find the pre-game function at Punt Road? Overall I thought it was OK, but I’m still buzzing after getting to meet so many of our club great legends.
I did the nerd thing and brought the new “Yellow and Black” book and brought a pen and tried to get as many signatures as possible. All up I got my book signed by Roger Dean, Mike Green, Disco Roach, Michael Mitchell, St Francis Bourke, Flea Weighman, Tony Jewell, Billy Borrot, Jimmy Jess, *smile* Clay, Barry Richardson, Geoff and Andrew Raines, Neville Crowe and the great Tommy Hafey.
It really was a massive buzz. I especially like to send a public thanks to a lady who was in the tent at the side of the stage that was taking stuff off fans and getting them signed by the many legends who where waiting to go on stage. I believe she was Crowe’s sister in-law and she was just so kind and considerate.
It was just amazing to see T-shirt Tommy, St Francis and Neville Crowe just walking amongst the many thousand supporters up the front of the stage. They were signing anything that went near them, taking pictures with supporters and generally soaking up the atmosphere. I had the pleasure of sitting at a table at a sportsman’s night about 18 months ago with Tommy and KB and it was no surprise to see Tommy being so generous with his time yesterday. He is a truly great man and who cares so passionately about the health and wellbeing of young people and the Richmond FC.
There were a couple of unfortunate negatives with the day. The first was Royce Hart. I believe he is properly our greatest player but basically he stayed in the tent all morning and refused to sign any merchandise. The lady who got my book signed for me seemed generally embarrassed and annoyed with Royce’s attitude towards the fans. The second was obviously the game actual game itself.
But all in all it was a wonderful morning and my memories of the day (including my signed book) will stay with me forever. I just hope our players also got to spend some time with so many of our great players and they realise just how great and proud our wonderful club was and how special it would be if they can play their individual part in resorting it to our rightful place in the AFL as a true powerhouse.
