NAB Rising Star Award 2006

Re: Rising Star Award 2006

Good luck to all nominees.  A couple like Moran and Le Cras are stiff to get nominated this year as they would have been favourites next year.  Nice for a tiger to win it but i think three nominations even a better sign.

I think it should be out of Pearce, Raines and Murphy because they became key players in their respective teams this year. Shaw solid but a bit of a plodder class wise compared to the other three.  Thomas has more X factor.

I think Polo and Foley (as others like Birchall and Rischitelli) get lost a bit in the conventional wisdom.

In particular Foleys stats this year are phenomenal.  Has only averaged 2/3 game time per game(if that) and ended up with an average of 15.4 disposals, 2.6 contested posessions, 4.1 tackles, 3.2 first posessions and 2.8 clearances.  If you extrapolate those figures to full game time, they would be good enough to having him ranked 3rd in the league for contested possessions, 6th in the league for tackles, 14th in the league for first possessions, 14th in the league for clearances and 25th in the league for disposals.

Seriously good figures and illustrate what many of us see - He is just a contested ball and clearance freak.  On tose figures he should be a monty for the Rising star but obviosuly a bit unfashionable for the cogniscenti!!

BTW Port's number 41 should go close next year - a little ripper.

Re: Rising Star Award 2006

Lot of deserved winners this year which makes it interesting. The AFL website panel give their votes and Pearce wins from Raines for what its worth.

Full list of nominations:

Michael Rischitelli, Cheynee Stiller, Matthew Moody (Brisbane Lions), Marc Murphy (Carlton), Dale Thomas, Heath Shaw (Collingwood), Clinton Young, Grant Birchall (Hawthorn), Andrew Swallow, Brad Moran (Kangaroos), Clint Bartram, Matthew Bate, Nathan Jones (Melbourne), Danyle Pearce, Brad Symes, Jacob Surjan, Troy Chaplin (Port Adelaide), Andrew Raines, Dean Polo, Nathan Foley (Richmond), Mark LeCras and Matt Rosa (West Coast Eagles).

The nominations came from 9 clubs. Clubs that had no nominations were Adelaide, Essendon, Fremantle, Geelong,  St Kilda, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs.
Clint Bartram is the man Great 1st year player and taken late in the draft.
Unlike some on the list who have been around for a 3 years.
Murphy would have won it if he had not got injuried and still may get up.
Andrew has been good but a 3rd year player should be making his mark.

Why both could still win the award next year.

The award is flawed,Sure Raines,Shaw & Pearce have had good years but lets be honest here. All are not in the same class bracket as Murphy & Thomas.
IMO despite the limited games both Murphy & Thomas have played during the year it should rewarded out of those 2.

:blah

The award sure is flawed.
Anyone who plays for The Blue filth or Collingscum shouldn't be eligible at all. ;D

Go Rainesy!!!!! :D

Re: Rising Star Award 2006

Would love to see Rainsey win it, but just can't see them giving it to Richmond two years running.

Re: Nab star

Its on Saturday on channel 10 from 1pm-2pm
Its not on Foxtel on Wednesday, there may be a replay during the week also

Re: Nab star

No Fox Footy as Ch 10 have exercised their right to show a highlights package of it, similar to the draft.  Another [swearing deleted] up by the AFL - if Fox want to show it they should be allowed to.

SEN are covering it though.

Re: Rising Star Award 2006

Raines wont win it as the pro Crettinwood juggernaut will roll on with all the clowns rating shaw as the winner.

Re: Rising Star Award 2006

RS judges
Andrew Demetriou
Adrian Anderson
Rod Austin
Gerard Healy
Kevin Bartlett
Robert Walls
Kevin Sheehan
Chris Mainwaring
Mark Bickley

Can you pick the odd man out?

Re: Rising Star Award 2006

Shaw has had a brilliant year.

Would have him tomorrow in the yellow and black, imagine him and raines on a half back flank each.
