NAB Umpires / Congratulations are in order [Merged]

Re: Congratulations are in order

Is it the rule changes, or is it simply the rise and rise of flooding?

The problem with flooding is that you cannot beat it by playing man on man football. You just end up with a clagged forward line and the flooding team kills you on the rebound because they have an open forward line which their quick players can run into. So both teams flood and you end up with the garbage we saw on Saturday, two teams taking it in turn to muck around with the ball until they turned it over for much of the game.

Most of these changes are trying to combat flooding but only succeed in entrenching it further because it is an easy game to play and covers up most of a team's weaknesses. We have no key forwards, no problem, flood back. We have an ordinary backline, no problem, flood harder. Our players are soft, no problem, flood. Our players try hard but have poor skills, flood. It cures everything, if you have a smart coach.

The contested mark has not disappeared because the rules have been changed; it disappeared because players will not kick to a contest where the marking forward is outnumbered three to one. They will try to finesse it to a dangerous spot instead.

Good tactics but boring as bat doo doo. They days of Robbie Flower and Doug Hawkins thrilling crowds on the wing are over. their modern day counterparts are playing as spare back pocket players at each end of the field.

Re: Congratulations are in order

If they want to open and speed up the game plus cut out the defensive flood the simplest way would be to change to sixteen player with a rotation of six off the bench.
Get rid of the fifty metre arc and replace it with the old full back and half back lines with the forwards and defenders required to set up behind these lines at every centre bounce restart.
Your midfield would consist of a ruck and three onballers with a little bit of extra room and time to get control and a clearance before the middle was swamped from outside and the game turned into a rolling maul.
Sides would be forced to hold their forward and defensive structures a bit more to one on one because there would be no spares flooding back to fill holes once a side gets a break out of the midfield and there would be room for forwards to lead into.
It would also help if there were less maggots ( and runners)( and waterboys )on the ground filling up the holes.

It was actually nice to see the umps in green in a few games. It meant that they weren't in your face.

It is true, it is sad to see the contest taken out of the game.

To all of those mums (and other people) that want the adult version of the game toned down because their kids might do it in junior ranks, there are different rules for a reason...

Take the contest out of the adult game and we may see Mick Malthouse as making sense!

"I can go down to the park down the road and watch them play on asphalt and it's called netball."

Will admit only saw first ten minutes of game as did not record the video properly but what is the story with channel ten shot clock is it accurate with when the kick should be taken. I thought the player had 30 seconds to kick it from when the umpire called time on, as Richo's first attempt at goal he did not get the ball back in his hands until it showed 14 seconds on the shot clock and that is when the umpire called time on.

If it comes down to it, to stop flooding and getting back a 1 on 1 contest, add a line on the field 30m out from goal, only 2 players from each team are allowed in that area! Just an idea don't crucify me 4 it!

there were a lot of off the ball free kicks... especially shepherding. still don't know how or why williams and gehrig got free kicks late in both games...
