Voss was a champ - Buckley was a very good player.

How many Copeland's and Brownlows do you have to win before you become a champ then? I don't use this often but you deserve it - ::)

Depends on now you use the word champ - I reckon there are only four in the last decade or so - Voss, Carey, Hird and Ablett. You can also add Judd I think even though he is only 23 or so. For me a champion imposes himself on a game and changes its course through will and skill. Lots of very good players behind who some may call champs - I think Brad Johnson is close probably closer than Buckley as is Robert Harvey. Macleod was always a better big game player than Buckley. Greg Williams also a better player than Buckley. On your criteria is West a champ - maybe? But maybe we can agree to differ on this point.

Robert Harvey is certainly a champion player. Anyone who plays for as well as he has for as long as he has deserves to be called a champion. 2 Brownlows back me up on this too. I do agree that some people use the word champion too much but I don't reckon I'm one of those. I wouldn't call Brad Johnson a champion, for example and, whilst he is a great player, I don't think he is quite in the same class as Buckley. I reckon that people's opinions on Buckley are jaded by the fact that he oozes arrogance and played for Collingwood (whereas Johnson is always smiling and plays for the Dogs).

Scott West? Probably deserved a Brownlow in his time (how many times runner up in a relatively unsuccessful side?) and has won 7 club Best and Fairests. If he hasn't been a champion player he's been pretty darn close.

Maybe we can have sub categories of champions . I cant separate Carey, Voss, Hird, Ablett and Judd in their ability to turn and control a match. Buckley is not in that class but maybe he still qualifies as a champ because of consistently good performances over a long period. Maybe Wayne Campbell qualifies on that criteria?

I'd still have players like Williams, Macleod, Johnson and even Kerr as better players than Buckley. Maybe you can be a champ and not be as good as another champ. In that case there can be many champs. On my criteria and in my opinion champs as a group have no superiors and that's why it should be a small group. I just dont think Buckley belongs in that small group although I could be convinced that Williams Macleod Kerr and even Johnson do.

BTW I am not a Buckley hater and like Jack I am quite impressed with the way he presents himself and his football knowledge. Even though he is a magpie I have come to like him over the journey - lets compromise and call him a Collingwood champ.
