Nathan Buckley

do some of you think bucks would leave richmond to go to collingwood at the first opportunity? you lot are a cynical, cynical bunch :hihi

I think Gary was probably giving Nathan Buckley some coaching tips - Gary's been known to coach a bit of junior footy. ;D

A couple of months ago on 3AW I heard Buckley say "Who would want to coach Richmond, it is a thankless task". These words have stuck in my mind and I am consequently sceptical at his capacity to embrace Richmond long term. I personally think we are better off with someone like Hardwick or Hinkley!

Hardwick or even Hinkley would be good fits for Richmond in so far as they were working class footballers, hard at it and guys who were respected for their work ethic.

Buckley was a receiver who is Collingwood through and through. He left Brisbane as soon as he could and I am sure he would jump ship as soon as he could to go running back to Eddie. We dont need Buckley. We need someone who has had to work damn ahrd to earn the respect they have. And that is what this club has to do...work damn hard to earn the respect of the football world.

Thats what we did under Hafey and Jewell. Theyw ere two guys unafraid to kick fragile egos and tell it as it is.

good question and from an outsider it appears to be a fair comment. 2 months ago general opinion was that our players are petulant, our coach was a dead man walking, drafted cousins was a massive mistake and our board was incompetent. fast forward to today and the only one of those opinions that are still present is that our players are petulant. any coach would like his chances of being able to successfully axe a handful of 30yo's a mould a young talented group

Good points Dean, I've had similar thoughts as well. I think we need a coach, who if he can have some signs of improving our playing list has the dedication to "our" cause and club. Buckley, I have a feeling will do his "apprenticeship" and leave (whatever club) and head back to collingwood asap.
Its not something I desire to see, I'd rather a bloke (coach) who would see the job as a longterm committment (to grow with the players) not just for selfish gain.

Let's not forget that once upon a time, Terry Wallace was a working class footballer, hard at it and respected for his work ethic. Didn't necessarily translate into his coaching and media persona.

:clap

Everything old is new again.

Which is why i think an expanded 'process' is overrated. It's a trade off of an incrementally better choice at best vs a dropping off of candidates as time goes by. I know the arguments for expanded processes, I've used them in business, but that has to balanced against opportunities and their timeliness.

I don't care who gets the job but whoever it is has to get back the EAT'EM ALIVE culture at the club which has been lost for the past 20 years no matter who the player is the team rules should be to attack the ball & the opponent as if your life depended on it move the footy on quickly & kick the ball long into the forward line & fight tooth & nail to keep it in there it doesn't take a highly skilled footballer to bust his gut for the team & play tough football.

I heard that too and have remembered it.

In fact I think a caller on AW asked him if he had a choice of coaching RFC or hosting the logies which would he prefer. I think he then described them both as thankless tasks. A bit of a light hearted answer really.

I think when he sits down and seriously looks at RFC, I would like to think anyone including NB could see what RFC could be and seriously consider the position.

Agree. Irrespective of the 'processes', the resultant success/failure of the coach is unknown. To miss an opportunity in order to complete a process would be reckless at best.

My Mate, who has a highly placed cousin at Collingwood, tells me Malthouse "WILL" get a 2 year extension. This means if Buckley isn't prepared to contract for at leat 3 years, he is only marking time to back to the Pies.

If Malthouse gets 2 years and Buckley goes for a 3 year contract, I can't imagine Collingwood appointing somebody (even Malthouse) for 1 year simply for the job to come up again to match Buckley's 3 years.

If it did happen, it would mean Buckley's third year would be a waste of time for the Club when it would be obvious he is only marking time to go back to Collingwood.

I'm sure our Panel would sort this potential problem out :P
