Neitz retires

I'm probably harping on a bit - but I'm a sad, desperate Demon supporter so I am allowed...

David Neitz to a Melbourne is what Buckley was to the pies, what Hird was to the Bombers, and what Richo is to the Tiges.

Melbourne will lose part of its identity with him going, and it is a lesser place.

If Melbourne were wise, they'd still hold on to him in sone capacity.

Neitzy played well both as a key defender & forward.

I'm sure there must be some sort of coaching role of that nature down at the Dees, if you want him.

He was a 'great' CHB in my opinion. Wayne Carey named him as his toughest opponent, And he is a Coleman medallist, and Melbourne's longest-serving Captain, player and largest goal scorer.

There is no doubt he is a Melbourne great, and he was a great player.
i agree he was a very good chb it was a mistake to make him a permanent forward. should have retired 3 or 4 yrs ago.

Agree. I think Neitz would be a great mentor to young KP's. He was quite the CHB, very good honest footballer. The only Melbourne player apart from Todd Viney with any genuine mongrel in him to have played for the D' over the past 10 years.

I will miss the calls from the outer "Go number 9, jolly good show chap".

Shame for Neitz and Melbourne.

It is hard to argue that someone who played the most games, kicked the most goals and captained the club in more games than anyone else is not a champion.

Well done on a great career.

I thought, when fit, Neitz's hip and shoulders were up there with the best.
And they weren't dirty ones to the head either. Simply good, very hard bumps to the body.
And he laid some beautiful bumps when playing at FF too, on the key defenders, which was great to watch, except against Richmond of course.

Actually a very good move.

Newton, very similar to our Schulz, was learning nothing at Sandringham with Sautner telling him not to get within 50m of him up forward. This has done nothing for Newton's last 3-4 years development at Sandy.
Remember, it is Newton who is now the 21yo, 194cm young key forward.

If Newton wasn't going to get an opportunity to develop at Sandy, then he may has well do it in Melbourne seniors.

The AFL/VFL Team alliances are a tricky matter to keep a handle on.

This Neitz, Newton, Sautner scenario is a prime example of where it breaks down badly.

It serves as a case study for Richmond/Coburg interest.

I suspect that this is one of the reasons why Andy Collins decided to move on, as he has at each of the allied clubs that he has coached. At the end of the day, players like Sautner will win you VFL premierships but will not help the development of AFL youngsters. The only way that the alliances will work is if the VFL club is totally subservient to the AFL club, often to its own detriment.

It is a shame that the AFL has not built an allowance in its drafting procedures to allow for a feeder club arrangement whereby AFL clubs can recruit players who miss each draft to their feeder club and develop them. Of course, this will only work if there is something in it for the AFL Club, unrestricted access to those players at any time during the year for example.

Didnt Rory Hilton feel the brunt of one of those bumps at the "G" one afternoon a few years ago?

Kept him out for 6 weeks or so from memory.
