New Bummers Clash Strip

Essendon's case is slightly different than every other club (and imho have every right to kick up a fuss)

They've worn the same design since Day 1 of their club back in 1873 and hold the world record of having the longest continuous usage of the same design in all of world sport

I'd be fighting for that too

It's the throwaway society we now live in where history and tradition is thrown away for a few bucks, the AFL should be protecting stuff like Essendon's record, not telling them to change their jumper when they play teams like Melbourne, St. Kilda, *cough* Richmond who have had many different designs over the past 100 years

Once you lose a piece of history it's gone forever

Essendon are the only club that has a case for a special exemption - Eddie & his whinging Pies have also changed jumper designs a dozen times

Well, I completely changed my mind now Ive seen the proposed Essendon jumper: My god : how ugly is that??? Theyll look like a team of tellytubbies.

Liverpool: in the best possilbe spirit I have to re-state that your arguments do not stand up to any scrutiny:

1. The sash is our traditional jumper: you cant argue otherwise and be taken seriously
2. To say our jumper has 'changed' in recent times is a misleading at best, exaggeration: Youare clutching at straws to claim the sash widening by 1cm or minor changes to the shade of yellow asamounts to a 'change'; if that all that was being proposed I doubt anyone would have a problem. The problem is that the change is far more radical than that.
3. The return of the sash on the back was a restoration not a change
4. NRL and Soccer, Gridiron, Ice hockey, Basketball, Netball, Tiddliwinks can have any home and away policy they like: Just because you point out the fact that they use different jumpers doesnt actually mount an argument for anything... so what? What has that got to do with us? Its interesting but hardly compelling argument for us to use a jumper that is not ours.
4. Who is the clash with? and why should we have to barstardise our beloved guernsey without that being made clear?
5. Why does anyone expect us (those who oppose change) to be satisfied just because you say"its inevitable, get over it". Im sorry but that does not constitute an argument that this is a good idea, or a right decision. I dont see any reason why I have to 'get over it' at all. I never got over them taking the sash off the back: and was happy for it to be returned: I wont get over a clash jumper and will be happy when it is scrapped.

What a lot of carry on about nothing.  If we have to wear an alternate strip once, maybe twice a year who gives a stuff.  We played in the Silver Top's in the NAB cup and the only complaint was that they looked shiite, not the fact that we weren't wearing the yellow and black.   They'll always be the RFC or Richmond Tigers and we'll always support them so why get all precious about it.

If we have to have a clash jumper for 1 or two games a year why not take the opportunity to make some good money for the club ala the MNM Blues.

The money we make from 1 game could mean another one or two rookies to our list or a fancy schmancy yoga/pilates room at the club i dont care, whatever :o

Advertising Ideas for the tiges...hmmm shoot away...

I think the solution to the Richmond clash jumper is simple and traditional.

The main strip should be the black guernsey with the yeallow numbers and the sash removed. This strip has NO white. It does not clash with Essendon or StKilda which show white. We always wear the home strip against these teams.

The alternative strip is the current jumper (which shows white) with white shorts. It does not clash with Adelaide who should wear their dark strip against us (which shows NO white).

In each case one team is distinguished from the other by the presence or absence of white.

We keep our traditional jumpers, as do the other teams but we lose the tradition of white shorts for the home team.

Am I over simplifying?

Like it or not, the board must put forward something. No club can afford a 110k fine for not having such a different strip.

I don't see a clash.  Its standover tactics by the AFL to maximise merch dollars, in a very misguided, uncreative way.

I'm not arguing with you at all....I stated, using notes from the official Richmond Football Club webpage, that our original jumper was blue, with a yellow and black sash.
Thats the official history.
If we used our original jumper, with these colours....a predominantly blue jumper with a yellow and black sash, then that should appease not only the AFL and apparent clashes, but also people who are worried about losing our tradition and history.

I never said "get over it", but I think if that the way the AFL are going, then the clubs/fans will need to stop worrying about "why do we have to change" and arguing, and start thinking about the actual clash-strip itself, colours, design, marketing, etc.

I've also never said that the 'clash' strip is purely for clashes.....as we do only have a "maybe" clash with the Bombers and the Eagles.
People say that we've played the game for 100 years, etc, etc....but the game is a lot quicker than it was even 10-20 years ago, with a lot more running and link-up play...and also, the modern-day jumpers made out of soccer-shirt material...well, some clubs have slowly changed their colours over the years. A perfect example, is the blue on the Demons jumper. Its nearly black these days, compared to the royal blue of the 1980's and earlier.

My thought, is that the AFL are using clashes to introduce the new jumpers, and then eventually, it'll become a 11-game away strip. And a lot of clubs are for it, as they can see a way of making money from this.
If Collingwood and Essendon were up against the wall like Carlton, you wouldn't be hearing the ruckus they are going on with at present either.
