I know this wont be popular but Denis Pagan should be considered. He did exactly what we require when he first went to Carlton.

It didnt work there because they has lost their draft picks and you may argue he culled them a little much. This guy got rid of everybody, Mostly SENIOR UNDERPERFORMING PLAYERS who tried to resist. He traded for anything he could get.

It is exactly what we need. I am surprised that he is not mentioned on here. He is also a dual premiership coach. One of my mates who played under him said he is a "pig headed dictator". Perfect.

Health reasons might exclude older coaches. Best we stick with the younger ones with more energy because they're gonna need it.

Pagan needs to get his U/18 side doing something first.

Don't know Ian. He did well with a very young list at Coburg and has a similar assignment in the SANFL. Given our need to rebuild he seems fairly suitable.

Is Collins a tough coach? As in tough on the players.

Not from what I saw at Coburg during the quarter & 3Q time huddles. Indoors / closed sessions could be a different story though.

You were comparing Wallace and Hardwick and Wallace appears to come up short. Some people, despite the things you mention about him, thought Terry was the answer for us at the time.

Yeah, I'll put my hand up as being pro Wallace back then, he did well at the dogs and had them playing some exciting football. But I was against a 5 year contract as you can never tell how things will turn out. I wanted Wallace out after the 2007 spoon. Spoons are acceptable if you are truly rebuilding but he was peristing with plenty of senior players and was getting us nowhere fast - 3 years is enough to judge this. You cut your losses and you move on. A 3 year contract at the time would have been the right choice, and then you assess things. We got desperate and bent down to his demands. We should have told him where to go.

As I said you can never tell how things will turn out, look at Hawthorn and Clarkson. Nobody rated him and his appointment was laughed at. Noody can say whether a Hardwick or a Hinkley will be the right appointment but there's only one way to find out. Who's to say that a Mathews, Malthouse or a Williams will work. We've tried experienced coaches and rookies with poor results. The only thing to do is keep trying until we find the right one.

He did take them to a premiership. He is a very good coach. But I don't think at this stage he will coach in the AFL. He is happy up in the SANFL and actually this season a couple of the coburg boys moved up to play under him.

I reckon 5 year appointment was arguably the right thing to do at the time to bring stability at the club. But for whatever reason Wallace and Miller then went out and coached and traded like we’d given them weekly rolling contracts.

Maybe they never felt secure in their jobs, maybe the were they had the wrong temperament for the rebuild, maybe they were stuck in the era before drafts became so important. In the end we got screwed, but we probably would have renewed Wallacxe's contract at the end of 07 anyway.
