New interchange rules for PREtend Cup

Just wondering what people think of the new pre-season rule trial.

Each club can have only 16 interchanges a quarter, a total of 64 a game in the cup.

My query is regarding injury. If the moves have been used up and there's a serious injury does a team have to play with less players for the rest of the quarter or game (depending when the injury occurred) ?

I wonder what evidence there is linking frequence of interchange usage to injury. Is this another case of fiddling with the rules for the sake of it or do the AFL have a legitimate reason to tinker?

I think limiting the number of interchanges is definitely worth trying but seems a little silly to do it int the NAB given that they have 8 on the bench.
With that many guys warming the pine I would have thought clubs would want to use the interchange as much possible to experiement and give new players a run. :headscratch

I would however like to see them limiting the the number of interchanges during the premiership season whilst keeping only 4 players on the IC.
I am quite happy to see players more fatigued primarily as I think it's a way the AFL can get back to higher amounts of contested football.

Not a fan of the system. I thought it was alright until I read all the fine details.

The shot from the top of the square is lame concept. Our game is unique, keep it that way please.

Hopefully will be a chance to see a few more of the new guys for us have a run though.
Heaps of new faces and numbers to keep with.

Shocking rule. Limits clubs abilities to play young kids.

Personally I think it is a just a way for Anderson to get people talking about the AFL in summer. This rule will never get through into the real season.

Just another example of Angry Anderson and Dimi ensuring they remain relevant by experimenting with the game again.
If a player gets sent of for the blood rule, split head, grazed knee it's one of the 16 interchanges for the quarter.
If a player gets carted off in a wheelie bin 'coz he's dyin it's not counted as an interchange during the first three quarters only. If said player dies and is carted off in the last quarter it counts as an extra interchange.
If you get down to the last minutes of a cliffhanger and you have used your 16 allocated interchanges during the last qtr. and your player gets killed he becomes the 17th interchange you are then penalised one goal and forced to finish with seventeen players on the ground.

Wouldn't that create some howls of anguish in a NAB final or even a real final. " WE WUZ ROBBED "
Far to many flogs in suits at the top level of our game all trying to justify their ginormous paychecks and relevance to life in general. Wish we could get the club out and educate a few of them.

Agree whole-bloody-heartedly TM.
I take it you meant "club" as in billy-club, not footy club, we'd get penalised if any criticism was forthcoming.
It just wouldn't do, to criticise vd (vlad destroyer) or aa (angry anderson)

Stuff the little billy club Willo, I was thinking something more along the lines of troglodyte cave man sized club. Or at least one of those baseball type clubs if a real one was not available.

From what i have read, it won't count if the player comes off on a stretcher for the first 3/4's but will count as an interchange in the last!

I think it is wrong that a player going off with the blood rule counts as an interchange, they never want to come off, it's the umpire making that call so why should that count to the tally

typical stupid AFL rule change

For the number of us that can still remember the 19th and 20th man replacement rule, it is an interesting set of complaints being argued at the moment by some :hihi

i don't support many of the rules they have in the NAB cup (ie. supergoal), but generally speaking, i support it this rule... although i do think 16 per quarter is too many considering this was around the 2007 average (not withstanding 8 players on the bench). it's worked well in rugby league.

Something has to be done about the interchange system so I support the experimentation. As Ian4 says it does work well in Rugby League. In Rugby Union it is a joke with a bench a mile long sitting around twiddling their thumbs.

The rugby league system is pretty good, 12 changes, with changes as a result of injury from foul play not counted.

Nearly forgot to add the last sneaky little bit to the rule change.
Any players swapped during the quarter or half time breaks get counted as part of the next quarters 16 changes.
Halftime arrives and your getting flogged so the coach rearranges the side and changes four players that aren't performing.
The boys crash in to start the third qtr and you have a couple sent off early with the blood rule and another hobbles off with a rolled ankle.
You've done seven interchanges before the qtr's got rolling and your rotation of running players is stuffed.
