New Stadium in Melbourne...?

I assume they would schedule the blockbusters at the third stadium and adhere to the long term contracts by playing all the crap games there.

Heh heh heh. Yeah, playing Carlton v Collingwood in a 40,000 seat boutique stadium up in North Melbourne would go down REAL well.

Heh heh heh...dumb as.

Again you missed the point. Have you ever got one?

I'd love to see this get built.

Imagine the uber sooking that would go on when we play Freo at the 3rd stadium ;D

If Dumby's gonna do it, then do it in South Melbourne. There's no other place in Melbourne which is more spacious, attractive and centralised for the population than there.

If VFL Park was supposedly built for the future generations of the SE suburbs boom, then what about the people in the West & North?? It took my dad over an hour to drive from the outer north to Mulgrave when I was a kid.

Where in South Melbourne TF do you think?

Bring down the Lake Oval and rebuild. Perfect views to the ocean, beautiful smell of air at night, bars not too far away, Albert Park lake nearby, car parking shouldn't be a problem or as tight as Docklands is.

No railway infrastructure - which is expensive to build and takes up a lot of space. Would be a nightmare to drive in and out of because South Melbourne already is.

When they play the Essendon v Collingwood ANZAC Day game down there, it'll be chaos. Heh heh heh heh.....

Well if Dumby's gonna build a stadium wherever, he (or next State govt) will have to take that into account.

We're already tightened up on weekends with a game at the G, Docklands and Melb Storm at Olympic Park on the same day. It all leads to the pathetic mess this city is in when it comes to infrastructure, but no Dumby just keeps strutting in front of news cameras selling himself to the public.

When the then VFL commissioned Waverley Park it did on based on the promises made by the then state government that a light rail line would be put in down that way, so people could be transported to the ground. From memory a rail line branch extension was also supposed to have been done, but like a lot of state governments before and since, nothing like that ever happened which is why the SE suburbs public transport infrastructure is *smile*, along with the rest of the state's.

Out of interest, what did it cost for the MCG redevelopment? Who paid for it, I bet the taxpayer whilst the MCC members just continued to sip on their G&T's, laughing all the way.

South Melbourne is not such a silly idea. Okay no rail line, but there was one close by, surely it could be reactivated and that's a good clean green idea that the government could actually promote and say they are doing something for the environment at the same time.

I reckon the AFL should have a hard look at Albert Park. Trams run up to Albert Park, bit of a walk like about a Km to the old Sth Melbourne oval. There is however a fair bit of car parking there, bars, good dining etc. Of course if the oval was to be redone, you'd have to have a ground that could hold at least 60 and ideally 70 Thousand to cover potential blockbusters. Now that would put Etihad out of business, Fremantle and West Coast, other interstate teams could just play there, who bloody cares. Meanwhile the Victorian Clubs could all play either at the MCG for expected 70,000 plus and finals, whilst Sth Melbourne covers the lesser Victorian club's rivally, leaving Etihad to swallow around with interstate clubs and interstate finals even.

One thing if Sth Melbourne got the nod, would a roof be a good idea or just have a smaller version of the G?

That railway line (Rowville) extension STILL needs to be built. Whether Waverley Park is there or not.

Waverley died because no state government has been in the past prepared to spend billions of dollars on a project likely to finish after their term ends and not win them any immediate votes. (Both sides of the aisle are as guilty as each other). the Rowville line has been needed for 20 years, and shock horror - It still hasn't been built. >:(

Didn't the MCG charge a surcharge of $1 per ticket for a number of years?

We better hope jbdumbo3 isnt in the building game, otherwise we're gonna be seeing studio apartments for families goin' up everywhere !

How stupid hey?

4 rail lines running between Eastern and South-eastern suburbs without an extension (just like the Showgrounds one) to VFL Park in Mulgrave.

Ah no, MCC fees went up. And as an MCC member I like a good beer when I'm there.

I think there might have been Gov money as well. I think somehow tied up with the Comm games.

Fair enough Ian, any idea what the total redevelopment of the G cost and how much money the state/federal governments put into the kitty as well? Anyway to find that out?

yeah, and they'll probably build it on the cheap to make the game day costs a lot cheaper... so we'll have 40,000 capacity stadium with no roof, limited undercover areas, limited corporate areas, limited amenities, etc... and when we play freo there on a cold, wet, windy day, the anti-etihad stadium whingers here will be wishing we had played at etihad.

It was actually a good ground to go to watch footy at. Just a little hard to get there. All the AFL needed to do was renovate it a little and get the government to extend the train line; or build a light rail extension.

"Build it (properly) and they will come."

I've always lived a lot closer to it than MCG/Docklands - and go past it to get to to the city.
But I hated it and avoided it like the plague.
