I know a thread on New Year Resolutions probably belongs in the General Section, but my one is related to football, so I'll pop it in here.
The other week I was chatting with my good friend and fellow cricketer, Johnny Vasil.
We were talking about our junior footy days.
Johnny played junior footy with South Melbourne Districts, down at Albert Park.
I spent some time down at Ajax, on the neighbouring oval.
Johnny knew many of the great old Jacka names - Zemo, Zubin, Rocky et al.
Then the name of Phil Davis came up.
Without any doubt in my mind Phil Davis was the best coach that I ever played under.
For those of you that don't know, Phil Davis, I believe, is the brother of ex-Essendon/North Melbourne star and captain Barry Davis.
Phil Davis was easily the best organised, hardest pushing coach that I ever had.
No doubt, that Phil had the Jackas the best prepared to play "A" grade footy.
Easily the hardest running side in the comp.
So, to my new year's resolution.
Phil Davis was famous for a painted steel board that sat at every training session.
The painted board listed the format for both short and extended warm ups, stage one of training.
That board was there for at least 10 years, used by later coaches, and is probably still there today.
So my resolution has been to, at the ripe age of 45yo, to recommence the first session of junior footy training.
Warm up laps, hamstring & groin stretches, star jumps, sit ups, push ups, full length kicks with both feet, followed by 40 metre sprints, jogging back, then again.
I started early last week, got home with a fully flared up hiatus hernia, and I think I might have had a minor heart attack as well.
But I've continued on this week with some extra sessions and now built myself up to 10 x 40 metre sprints. Hopefully I can double that in a fortnight.
So that's my early New Year resolution.
Providing the back holds up, I should be OK.
Good luck with all of your New Year resolutions too.
