Well he looked like one today.

Finished the season on a high note after a strong return from his broken leg.

Terry finally played him as an attacking mid.
Makes you wonder why he doesn't play there more often after todays performance.

Agreed Tooheys. He has the skill to be a perfect outside midfielder with the right players feeding him the ball.

Exceptional today, but just IMHO is not anything more then a pinch hitter when it comes to the midfield,HBF for me, but well done Newy on a very good comeback year

We still require his poise & skill coming out of half back. Should be encouraged to run off his man & attack where possible, but until guys like Casserley can come in & take on his role across half back, he should remain there. While Raines the panic merchant is still there giving the ball straight to the opposition, it is useful having skilled players like Newy to feed it up the ground.

He kicked a nice goal, outside 50.  For Newman to become a midfielder, and he has the potential to be a top class midfielder, he'll need to really work hard on his engine during the pre-season, and I really mean he needs to work really, really hard.

Excellent comeback year, by the way. ;)

Well said!

Been very good over the last two weeks. Played on Hird against Ess and I think the occassion may have got to him because he actually ran with him.

Played well yesterday also.

I don't think he has the stamina for midfield but would love to see him used next year on a hff or the wing. I've been watching those fantastic torpedoes he finishes the pre game warm up with. Could kick 35-40 goals next year if used properly.

not accountable enough to play in defence....i agree ToO...should be workin very hard over the summer to lock a role in the midfield....throw Cogs in there along with Axel and we all of a sudden have a bit of grunt and size through the middle.

If and it is a big if we trade Pettifer, i would like Newy to play Pettifers role, he is a great kick for goal and would add more forward pressure than Pettifer, than rotate through the midfield swapping with Lids and Tambling.

Many have complained Newman can't play in the middle because he can't win his own footy.
That may be true but if he can be FED the ball 20 or 30 times he's going to do a lot of damage by foot because he still has some of the best disposal in the team.
It would be fantastic to finally see him make the transistion to the midfield and yesterday was very encouraging that he may be finally ready to take that step.

If we had someone who could take his role in defence and surely there must be someone at Coburg who can take on that spot then Newman could play in the midfield and a player of his experience and physically better developed body would help out our skinny young midfield.

If your watching Coburg you will see a bloke named Trav Casserly....im a huge fan of his....he would be the next in line for a half back role IMO.

Defensive pressure? :cutelaugh

He doesn't do it in the backline, what makes you think he'd change his stripes up forward??

i was just thinking what a great kick he is and there's penetration in his kick. he could be damaging in regards to shots at goal. i recall at least twice in the last few weeks he's kicked a beautiful long goal, he's deadly accurate, worth a punt next year sending fwd or into the midfield for a time
