I think that people are being a bit harsh on these two players. Just read the ins & outs post and too many people had bowden out after a game where i watched him off ball a lot to see if things had changed, the bloke is running harder than ever off the ball and putting his body on the line more than ever. Skills are back to being great. Its simple the bloke is good and belongs in the team. As for newman he had 1 bad game where his skills were off and he was shocking but he is in our top 5 skillful players and gives brilliant run off the hb line. Long term player, will be around for a long time and works very hard for the team.
Give them a break and start putting pressure on individuals like Pettifer who play for them selves.

Banksie, I reckon Pettifer was easily as effective as Bowden on Sat. We all have our whipping boys. Doesn't mean we're right.

I hear what you are saying.

But here's the thing with Joel. His best games have been on the backline. Some people may dispute this and say he should have gone into the centre. I for one think he never handled a mid role particularly well. This is supported somewhat by his AA slection on the backline. Now the coach has pretty much said he's not right for our backline anymore. That might change down the track, but for the moment, it looks like a wing or forward for him. Did he really do anything Morton or Pettifer couldn't do at least as well? I think the arguement that he needs to play pretty well to keep his spot is relevent in this era of rebuiling, especially since he doesn't make up the spine.

Newman should continue to be an honest contributer, sure. I'm not so sure that he's in the top 5 of our most skillful players. Debatable. Needs to maintain form just like everybody else.

There are several threads on many of the players. Your last sentence sounds like you haven't read the Pettifer thread!

Don't worry too much about him Banksie, Joel is much smarter than than people give him credit for. He is aging though and this at least has to be acknowledged. Joel though is smart enough with his positioning to keep on in this present pace of game for a couple more years (if he wants to - don't be surprised if he goes out doing his best work - all of his own volition - as he will go on his terms I reckon).

My issue with Newman is he can get his arse handed to him if he plays on a smart attacking player such as S Johnson or Milne. Dont think he has the engine to keep up with them

Nor does Newman have the necessary defensive mind-set, good attacking medium and small forwards must lick their chops when he stands them

I hope we can draft a Malthouse-type back pocket soon

I reckon we're close with Jake King but it'll be hard to find a tough nut like Bushy in these days of soft footy.

Read in another thread that Steve Johnson boasts that he has kicked atleast one goal in every game he's played in since under 8's.
I find it a bit hard to believe but I 'm sure someone will have his stats.
If so he was kept goaless the other week and I think Newman was one of his opponents.(in the wet though!!)

I personally would love a malthouse type only problem is he would be suspended every 2nd week, you see he sufferd from an afliction known as football dislexia. very much the same as the reading one were you saw the words in reverse, he saw the football and opponents heads the same way
