But the other thing that hurt us was losing Stewart Maxfield - he had a breakout year at the Swans in 96. And Justin Murphy had a good year at Carlton. Both of those would have given us some more run during a couple of close losses, which cost us finals yet again, and possibly turned these losses into close wins.
We should have done better that year no doubt. However, our recruiting around that period - 95/96 - was abysmal and would have caught up wtih us sooner or later regardless!
On a side issue we should never have sacked Walls during the following year - it was a total over-reaction borne from over-rating our list. Say what you like but Walls is streets ahead of Geisch and Frawley as a coach!
The tail wagged the dog, as it appeared to when Walls' replacement Gieschen was pushed out a couple of years later. The Mighty Wozman said:Touching on from what Ridley said earlier and this post, Daffy and a few of his clique did indeed start getting ahead of thjemselves.
Walls came to the club and challenged those in "the clique" and told them a few home truths about their attitudes; deficiencies; and overall dedication.
They did not like this. In fact, they refused to take any of Walls' constructive criticism on board. Basically, a soft mutiny took place i.e. "the clique" did not play for him and it was the demise of Walls on that dark Adelaide night.

He rarely has a bad word to say about anyone & is good mates with a lot of the senior clan at that time. However along with others couldn't stand Daffy & his selfish, self-centred appoach both on & off the field.
Ironically, Leysy understands a similar thing is thought about a current player who plays a somewhat comparible role :-X

I was quite excited getting Walls....I thought his tactical nouse would help lift us to another level, and was way ahead of Northey, who relied on passion and commitment. Unfortunately, while we may have got one, we lost the other.

Should have sacked them all. Different times now...LeeToRainesToRoach said:After the game that prompted Walls' sacking - a 130+ point loss in Adelaide - quite a few players hit the grog and ran amok at the hotel.
