Night Grand Final

Heard Elaine Canty on Jon Faine this a.m.

Is she still an AFL Tribunal member?

Anyhow, she came out in favour of a night GF - even Sunday night, for god's sake!

To top it off, she plugged for a GF not played on the MCG!

Couldn't find the station phone number in a hurry - just as well - but her argument for moving the GF from the G made about as much sense as holding the Melbourne (or Caulfield) Cup in Bangkok.

They are already putting the Finals out of reach of families with growing children - move the GF to a night-time venue and you further weaken the attraction of football for kids.

Already, country clubs are becoming scarce - if the slide is not halted soon, there will be no kids to pick up in future drafts.

Haven't been to a GF since 1980 and I don't want 2007/08 to be at night . I like the existing build up from the morning, few beers, some pies or a barbie about 1.00 PM, bit of pre-match THEN the big one!

A night GF would spoil the day for me and for the kids who can't stay up till 11.00 PM to see the end of the game and then watch the aftermatch presentations/celebrations.

Jeez, I could be asleep in the chair by half-time >:(

The only plus for me would be the black and yellow fireworks when we won.
Would rather have that one DAY in September, went to night GFs in the "consolation" Night Series at the South ground when Moses was a pup.

The NRL grand final, World Cup rugby, World Cup soccer are on at night. The AFL should follow like sheep as other codes have theirs at night. NOT!!

The argument that everyone else has it at night, so we should too is complete rubbish.....our game is unique FFS.....we play our GF the last Saturday arvo in September, the umpire bounces the ball, men in hats wave 2 white flags for a goal, these are things which make our game special.

But there'll be better ratings at night they say. Who gives a rats, everyone who is remotely interested in AFL knows it's on at 2.30pm the last Sat arvo in Sept (provided there's no dispute about who'll sing the anthem)...and watches it, either at home, or at a BBQ/party, pub...etc. So a few tossers who don't follow football may watch it if it's on at night?? Gee, that's a good enough reason to change a 100 year + tradition....

But there'll be fireworks they say.....care factor = 0. If you want fireworks, go to Moomba.

Would the attendance be any greater if it's played at night? No
Would ratings be better? Possibly, but give me a football follower who lives and dies by ratings.
Would a great tradition be lost? Yes
Are the skills of our great game better during the day, or at night? Although I don't have any evidence, I'd guess that the skills at day are much better.

People....don't stuff around with our great game, leave it the way it is, especially the GF....remember, once it's changed, it's changed forever.......

My only reservation is for those players that wear contact lenses.

I still remember always having a shocking time at night training whilst wearing contact lenses. So much glare when looking up for the ball.

Better run the draft camp at night.

I'm with you Phant. I could never mark at training under lights.

Come to think of it I wasn't too flash during the day either. ;D

Given that it's played in the open I think a night GF has virtually ZERO chance of being played in dry conditions.

It would be a shame to eliminate what little chance there is of fine weather footy on Grand Final day.

Maybe if we moved it to February. ;D
