I haven't read the article from Stevens yet, but was chatting to a couple of mates about midfields.....things like how players like Cousins run their guts out in the last quarter, and yet we see Tuck, Cogs, etc with hands on knees, blowing hard....in the first quarter!!! :-[

But back to your rant...

I think Cousins/Kerr/Judd ARE better than Black/Voss/Lappin.

You have to realise that the Brisbane midfield have had the luxury of kicking the ball down to tall marking forwards, who are good kicks for goal as well, such as Lynch/Bradshaw/Brown.

Cousins/Kerr/Judd have Lynch down there, who can be very hot-cold....and who else?
Maybe Hansen...maybe Hunter....but neither are in the same class as the Brisbane forward-line of their Premiership seasons.

The Brisbane midfield may have Premiership medals, but that is due to the TEAM performance on the day....not just a midfield performance.
So to say the Brisbane midfield is better because their team won the Premiership, is ridiculous.

Give me Cousins/Judd/Kerr over Voss/Black/Lappin any day, thank you very much.

P.S: I guess Ablett, Skilton, Lockett....are all hacks too because they haven't got a Premiership medal, eh? :

Yer Voss, Black and Lappin were part of a triple premiership SIDE! But have a look all over the ground, that lions side had great players all over the park! Chuck Lynch, Bradshaw and Brown in the eagles line up, gives them a forward line and they would be looking at back to back flags and only one more to go to equal brisbanes feat!

Individual players cannot be measured by how many premierships they win! If that was the case Martin Pike would be the best player of the modern era!

For my opinion of who has the better midfield, well Voss and Judd cancel out. Cousins and Black cancel out. Kerr and Lappin cancel out. Aker also rotated thru the midfield.... dunno if the eagles have an answer to him, they have a few other quality midfielders, but nuffin up2 akers standard. But on the 3 mark stevens was talking abt, i would say they would be pretty even and if it was possible to actually play them head to head, my god that would be a amazing!
So get off ur high horse, thats not the worse thing u will read in the hun or on pre!

i find it amusing that whenever a new star/stars are in their prime the old stars are quickly shoved off as hacks.

Kerr, Cousins and that other guy are great but watching that Brisbane midfield in full flight during those halcyon years (even as a hardcore tiges supporter) was and still is one of footy's most breathless sights. I dont get that same reverence when watching the Weagles. Maybe in time i will but i still think they pale in significance at the moment ... time will tell.

Im not baggin the weagles midfield and would never do that......Im baggin mark stevens for makin a comparison.......In guitar speak,its like comparing Satriani to Steve Vai....etc....a waste of time......theyre all great players........My beef is journos makin silly comparisons....and 3 flags on the trot is very,very hard to argue against.......youd reckon that in a BIG,BIG state like Wa.A.,they coudve unearth a couple of forwards to finish the work off.....although Quentin Lynch looks to be a matchwinner on his day.....

And....may I remind you of the greatest midfield of all time......Bourke,Barrot and Clay with Green,Stewart and bartlett weaving their magic......ah the memories....... :hihi

You've used the analogy that Kerr/Judd/Cousins can't be better than Black/Voss/Lappin, because the former hasn't won a Premiership, whereas the latter has.

My argument is, that, personally, I think the Eagles are better (just watch the 2nd half against the Crows as an example), and I agree therefore with what you say in your original post, with what Stevens said: ......."give me Kerr,Judd and Cousins over Simon Black,Vossy and Lappin".

....because I think they are a harder running midfield, than the Lions, and the Eagles midfield do it all day, with a minimum of rotations through there.
Just because they haven't won a premiership (yet!) shouldn't be held against them as one of the great midfields of the modern era.
If you had a Fevola, Hall, J.Brown, or even a Richo, in their forward-line......just imagine...

I think the eagles midfield stacks up pretty well against the lions fab 4. We've ben priveledged to have two such squadrons to watch in the same era.

and purpos of mind......

ive had that old argument thrown up heaps of times....i.e.....whose the best full forward....whose the best centreman........

Awesome player....no argument from me....but....how many flags was he involved in?
Was it geelongs strength or geelongs weakness having Ablett in the side?My point being that they relied too much on His greatness when the chips were down.......
Malcom Blight was almost as exhilirating a player to watch,but.....he was an exceptional player in an exceptional team.......2 flags etc......

In closing.......my earliest footy lesson in life was the classic chestnut which has stood the test of time in all areas of sport........

Both were/are gun midfields, but there's some short memories on this thread. Rip out a couple of tapes circa 2001/2002 and you will see the Lions fab 4 ripping games apart like the Weagles are doing now. Make the comparison on what the lions were then, not what they are now. Anyway it's hard to compare them as they were/are fundamentally different. Lions slower but with more grunt and physical menace ala Voss and Co., which suited their team's style. Then over the past few years, the game morphed into the modern super fast, run and carry style we see today, which is more suited to the Weagles ala Judd and Co. Both Guns, just slightly different.

u mean cousins/kerr/judd/fletcher/braun against voss/lappin/black/aker/power (ppl seem to have forgotten about hadley) i think the brisbane midfield just tops the west coast one. i also think that the mcdonald/keating/charman combination is better than cox/seaby. but thats just my opinion. you can say that brisbane had better forwards to kick to but how much does that account for when your comparing midfields. if someone could get a stat of the lions in the middle of their peak in probably 2002 of how many clearances they had to how many the eagles had this year that would be interesting.
