When you look at our current player list, almost a third of our players are on their last chance or close to retiring.

Cameron - may Retire.
D Kellaway - may Retire.
Rogers.
King.
Vardy.
Mills.
Biddiscombe.
Houlihan.
Hyde.
Nicholls - if he doesn't perform.
Fleming - If he doesn't perform.
Pettifer - although I think it will be his year.
Newman - has to step up this year.

Throw the rookies in for good measure.

Moore.
Shir.
Pickering.

We will certainly have some players, and money to play with come trade time.

Dear the above Richmond players,

You are offically on notice.

Perform or perish.

Signed, sick of mediocre performances.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Hope they have commenced talks with Chris JUDD already. (In secret of course).

Would really sure up the midfield, now all we need are some tall defenders and a couple of young up and comers.

I reckon this will really be when MILLER starts to show his true value to the club.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

It will be Shock and Awe at tigerland come september if we perform like last year ;D

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

No real surprise with the names mentioned. Except I would be giving Newman, Pettifer, Nicholls and Fleming at least 2 years to prove themselves.

The big question is, do we try and pull off a trade coup and get a player such as Judd, or go for the best possible kids in the draft ???

I suppose that we won't be able to answer this question until the back half of the year when we can better assess our strengths and weaknesses.

At the minute, I think a big strong backman/ruck and another midfielder.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Apparently about two-thirds of the Bulldogs list will be on the market as they'll be selling the farm to stay alive. But I think it is time to invest in youth and avoid the temptation of poaching Nathan Brown, Luke Darcy etc...

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

"Selling the farm" - that will describe a few clubs at the end of this year.

But how is the Bulldogs? What wre they thinking when they budgeted for 25,000 members ??? Seems that once again, some sports marketing guru has misread the marketplace. Prob to appease the AFL with a lovely business plan - sucked them in.....

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

IMO getting Chris Judd would involve (at a minimum):

-Giving WC a draft pick in the top 5 (will Richmond finish in the bottom 5); and

-Giving WC a young player - perhaps a young West Australian player that may want to go home eventually anyway.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Exactly. At the very least they would ask for Mark Coughlan. So what's the point? Forget about horsetrading, we have to start recruiting good juniors.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

If we fail this year as most people are predicting I would think that Frawley, Crocker, Hutchinson, Wheadon and Beck would all get the chop before the playing list is even looked at. Let the new coach decide who stays and who goes.

BTW, good luck Danny :)

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Nathan Brown would be a decent player to target, he has always been keen to get to Richmond somehow, in a similar way to Kane JOhnson. He would bring a lot to our forward line to take pressure of Richo and Co.

I think with Miller on board, we could be a chance to land a player like Brown.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Hopefully former bulldogs coach Wallace can lure Brown into coming to richmond next year. ;)

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Forget Bulldogs players , if we are going to poach anyone from that club it should be Scott Clayton.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Reality check :

No club wants our crap anymore than we want theirs.

Your list (just say they all went) leaves us 16 players short.

We might get 4 picks in the top 70 at the national draft.

Leaving us 12 short.

Got a dozen sure bet players at home no-one knows about ? ;)

In reality : we are 3 short already.
Delist Bidders : if only for the salary cap. That's 4.
Cameron retires. 5.
Dunc and Rogers become vets. 7
Perhaps upgrade Moore...back to 6.
Draft 5 Kids : ruckman ; chf ; chb ; rover ; centrman.
leave one spot open for a rookie (incentive)

BTW : salary cap. Rosy and MT have better info than I do on this but Coughlan is coming out of contract and EVERY club will chase him hard or at least ask about him. His manager will tell Mark just how much some other clubs are prepared to offer. That same manager will also let Miller know.

We need to pray that :

Cameron + Bidders + (Half of Dunc + Rogers wage)
= 6 kids + all the pay increases to Coughlan etc...

We may have to trade a very decent wingman just for salary cap alone...leaving two spots open (unless there is a player left at pick 70 something).

Cougs signed a two year contract in August last year.

Granted both Dunc & Rogers qualify for the veterans list.

But under the rules only 2 players are allowed on the veterans list. Currently we have 1 = Campbell. Which means only 1 of the 2 you mention can go on the veterans list for 2004. I would think that the player with higher salary for 2004 would be placed on the Veterans List.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

the last ratified rule on the veteran situation also includes the rookie list.

You can have 6 players outside the list of 38...made up from either veterans or rookies. We could have Dunc, Campbo, Rogers and 3 rookies this year or next year.

Glad to hear Coughlan is signed up...but I'm sure you can substitute someones name for his...the situation will remain that players we want to retain will want another and probably a better contract.

The point remains that we don't have the luxury (and IMHO the necessity) to cut a lot of players...i'd rather have Mills than no. 80 in the draft

That is exactly the problem.  We have held on to players instead of being brave and taking a few gambles.  I mean no disrespect to MILLSIE here, but seeing as you have mentioned his name then here we go.

He has had a bit of time on the list without really making an impression and if he doesn't solidate a senior spot this year then we should look at our alternatives.  I believe we have recruited one of the best in the business in this respect in Greg MILLER.  I hope that he will inject some rationale into these decisions and assist in helping the club make prudent decisions re recruiting.  Lets look at our round one enemy, the wobbles.  A lot of no names there a couple of years ago, but they have done the job and taken the Wobbles to runners up titles in both the real season and the Woozee cup.  No matter how you feel about it you have to applaud MALTHOUSE and the recruiting staff for the turn around they have produced.

We need to get it together and I really believe that the most significant steps in a long time have been taken this year.  Not only on field, but off field.  We have seen what a difference the off field make up can have in the past and I believe we are soon to witness this again.

All I want is success for our beloved Tigers and I believe that to achieve this a few hard decisions need to be made, but I will leave that up to the people like Greg MILLER to make those decisions, because I for one could not and would not.

Go tigers, United we stand, divided we fall.

If i remember correctly, Hall was taken at pick 79 in the 98' draft and Zantuck at 76 in the 99' draft. All would agree that these two are infinately better prospects than Mills. Gustiger said it best, we hang on to players for too long. 3 years is more than enough time to make an assessment on any player.

Re: November 2003 could be the biggest cleanout ev

Mills is a hack. He is slow, skinny, and has no talent.

He has had his opportunities, get rid of him and give another kid a chance. And it is possible to pick up a decent kid late in the draft, it requires good intelligence from scouts and Mr Beck.

Mr Beck would be stuck following the main junior leagues and Teal Cup etc..so it is up to scouts to find kids with some potential.
