I'm honoured to be Matthew Whites PREsident this year. Hes the kind of player I really admire. Matty was a bit of a surprise 1st round selection (pick 5 over all) in the 2006 Pre-Season Draft and proved to be an inspired choice by the club. A hard, gutsy worker with a never say die attitude who earned his keep in the senior team much to the detriment of Coburg where hed been dominating before his call-up.
I asked Matt this morning how he viewed his first season looking back and he said was extremely happy with it. He didnt expect to play a game at all so to play 11 was a real bonus. The season far exceeded his initial expectations.
I also asked Matt what his expectations for this upcoming season were and he expects pretty much the same again, to work hard and do the role he needs to do for the clubs benefit. Hes been training more up forward this pre-season, an unfamiliar role to him considering hes always played in the back line and midfield in his junior footy. Hes enjoying the challenge, thinks its a good change and is still learning.
Matt thinks the pre-season training has been a lot harder this year than it was last year. Theres pressure with everyone training with more intensity due to the top-15 concept. They have an increased workload and are training much harder.
Asked if the players sense the same sense of anticipation and excitement a lot of supporters do that things are ready to improve now Matt said he thinks they really do. Training has been top notch, far better than last year. The players are ready and keen to step up and play finals. He thinks the players, the club and the supporters are all feeling and hoping for the same thing.
It was really nice to chat to Matt and I thank him for it.
I wish him a very enjoyable and successful season ahead. Whether at Coburg or Richmond Matt will give his all both on and off the field and will be a very good player for Richmond, the team he's barracked for since birth, for years to come.
Eat em Alive Matt.
