Oh No Not 9th Again

Am I the only one that thinks are run in the finals might actually hurt the club long term? I'm concerned that to trade up in the draft will be at inflated costs, and we really need to have one more good draft before we make our run.

I know the draft is deep, but we need the best of the best, not the best of the rest.

I said this ages ago now, and I'm going to ask the same question. Given where we stand as a football club, with half our list at one end of the scale (nearing retirement) and the other half at the other end of the scale (starting out), aren't we best off to finish as low as possible to get the best possible player into our club? I'm not saying tank, but what I am saying is, give JON, Roach, Pattison, Limbach, McGuane a real go in the seniors and get some experience into them. Just back them and say you're going to keep playing them for the rest of the year, to get some experience and demonstrate what is required at this level.

It's quite clear we aren't going to make the finals, and even if we somehow managed to fluke a position in the 8, not good enough to make it past the first week. It's time to stop thinking short term tigers fans, and start to think about where we'll be after Richo, Kellaway, Gaspar and Johnson. We need a complete rebuild of the roster, not a half assed refurbishment.

After watching the u/18 champs yesterday madcow,I'm thinking 12th might do just nicely. ;)

Finals next year...

Agreed lets go for the best draft pick possible finishing 10 as opposed to 12 will be the difference between getting a Hansen or Thorp Sellar ect and not getting them.

in no particular order the top7 will be ad  wce  melb  coll syd  wb  stk. eighth spot will be between geel  port  and freo. closely followed by haw rich and brisbane. imo the club in the best position to dramatically improve next yr is brisbane.
there we go ferals a look into the dark crystal which by the way is rarely wrong.
if we are sitting 10th with no chance of making the finals with 2 games to go and 12th is a possibility if we lost those last 2 games, the club would be derelict in its duty if it did not tank those games.ie played 12 kids.

Claw, you are darker than Donger' s undercarriage. We are the richmond footy club. We do not tank games.

You're totally right, but it's impossible to convince some people. There are some here who seriously believe that magically the future will take care of itself. That a pick 8, 9 or 10 is as good as pick 4, that there is no need for strategic planning beyond simply the visceral satisfaction of celebrating a win on a Saturday afternoon. Just to hear the Tigers theme song belted out, even if we have just scaped in against substandard opposition, even if it costs us a Thorpe or Hansen at the end of the year, and even if it potentially sets us back another 12 months is enough for them. They are the same people that celebrated our win last year against Hawthorn who eventually cost us Dowler, and who probably still wouldn't trade that win even now. We were just butchered by a 100 points for the third time this season, the finals are gone (as if there would be any appeal in being slaughtered in the first round of that). The system is there to be worked, let's pick the kids and let's work it.

He may be dark, but he's nailed that top 8 almost position perfect...applause to him.

The_General, great post. The great thing about bringing the kids in now when there's nothing left in the season for us is that there's no downside to it. They get experience, they learn what AFL is about and they'll be the better for it next year. Nothing but positives can come from it...

If we do finish 9th, its a great effort, considering injuries sustained to key players.  This year our youngsters have shown the way, we sadly missed the likes of Cogs around the ground (averaging over 25 poss), Newman (additional running back & tagger), Brown (on and off), Richo (wrist) and our biggest Knoble (would make a big difference) and the absence of Gaspar & Kellaway.

I say well done Tigers, however, the season isn't over yet.  Play hard for the remaining games and let's see what eventuates!

absolutely agree but as claw alwys says: it's the worst address in the AFL. One year there on your way up is oK but we look like reiding there for a while.

Too good for bottom 4 ---- not good enough for finals

I expect us to win 3 more games and hope we do: but if we slide to bottom 5 it won't dissapoint.
