If you want to re-hash Carltank history how about Balmey flattening Southby, Hall and Waite in the 73 GF. I certainly loved it but I'm sure the Stinking Tanker fans would have different adjectives for it. :P

The big fella was poetry in motion that day.

You mean Maxwell? Yes but the other player had his jaw broken.

na i was refering to setanta.

maxwells report was fine by me, he had no intentions for the ball, he is very undisciplined and makes me wonder why he is captain if he doesnt lead by example and play in the right way. Michael Voss was tough, he didnt do stupid things, maxwell over-runs the ball and takes an unexpecting opponent out twice now.

The AFL's key policy these days is to protect the head of a player at all costs.
If you contact the head then expect suspension. I personally think that's a good move.

Of the face of it, the contact looks like a fair bump but it's obviously not when someone's jaw gets broken.
Hip and shoulder means hip to shoulder, not shoulder to head.

Don't really have an issue with the suspension to Maxwell.

Just looked this up and it's quite interesting / funny!

A player by the name of Bert Franks (Sth Melb) was reported in 1907 for kicking and abusing an umpire. Verdict - not guilty!

Then in 1910 The same player was reported for kicking and assaulting an umpire. Verdict - Again not guilty.

But then in the next round, Bert Franks is reported for abusing an umpire and got 33 weeks!

One wonders how an umpire could get a report wrong when it involves himself, and how a player could get off on such a charge twice, only to get suspended for 33 weeks for mere abuse of an umpire!

THE (ALMOST) FULL HISTORY OF KICKING AT VFL / AFL LEVEL

I dont have the records from 1999 onwards, but here's a brief synopsis........

First kicking charge sustained was against Bill McGee (Sth Melb) who got 3 weeks. Our very own Bill Burns was next in 1909 and recived 46 weeks! Apparently he was a much better kick than McGee.

What is it with Irishmen in Carlton jumpers.........1914 - Patty O'Brien: Kicking - 13 weeks "I didna"!!!

CONSISTENCY...........

In 1925, Harold Johnson of Nth Melb was reprimanded for attempted kicking. His Team mate must have been quite releived about this as he then went in on the same charge "attempted kicking", however he came out with a 99 week suspension!! One wonders if he may have de-flowered the chairman's daughter at some point to deserve that!

Interestingly if you look at the record of this sort of charge, kicking was happening quite consistently, until the end of 1969.

From then until 1985, no kicking charge was sustained. However the charge against Jimmy Krakauor in 1985 opened the flood gates and kicking became fashionable again.

Bear in mind Syd Jackson was let off a kicking charge in 1972 that would have seen him miss the finals. Syd's defense was that he was racially abused. The opponent never forgave Syd for this allegation and swore black and blue (pardon the pun) that it was an absolute lie. In latter years, one of the Carlton officials at the time admitted the story was concocted to get Syd off the charge and allow him to play in the GF
