Tonight, it's curtains for the Fox Footy Channel.

The future of afl broadcasting is looking bleak. Alot of my (and many other football fan's) favourite shows like white line fever, the gospel, saturday central and headliners are unlikely to see the light of day again, and i for one am gutted.

Thanks to the fox footy team for these wonderful past five years, and i only hope that fox sports 3 can find a place for afl coverage that is as comprehensive as yours has been (however unlikely that is).

Comiserations to the great staff at the channel who may lose their jobs. I hope especially that Clinton Grybas can find a regular position at channel ten or fox 3, as he is a great commentator and a top bloke.

Farewell Fox Footy, you've served us all well.

Re: One last dance...

Agreed. Its hard to believe it has gone. The one thing i hate about FTA is the adds. With Foxfooty you get to hear the experts after a goal etc on their thoughts leading upto the goal.
I just hope common sense prevails and an agreement is reached with Foxtel.

Re: One last dance...

I hope to Christ I get something right for once but I get the feeling we wont be off the air for too long as we all know the Afl are strongly looking at doing there own channel, please, please, please :nodyes

Ripped off

I know many of us who had Fox Footy are really going to miss it.

But to add salt to the wounds, I now discover that the new Fox Sports 3 isn't even part of the basic package any more, completely excluding us from most of the available footy stuff and even the cricket champions trophy that's starting on the weekend.

I feel really ripped off by everyone that had something to do with the demise of FFC. And now I feel even more ripped off by foxtel (austar as it is here in darwin) for the way they've responded. Not good enough I say.

Was always going to be the case hopper.Didnt buy the ceo of Foxfooty excuse that it was soley Ch7,s fault why it didnt continue. When it was announced way back in May that foxtel was to introduce a "new Channel".saw the writing on the wall with foxfooty going and what package the new channel will come under.

If Fox had any brains at all, they'd take the best shows from Fox Footy e.g. On the Couch, White Line Fever etc. and carry them over to Fox 3.

Channel 9 obviously still see some value in a footy discussion/interview show - even without having any footy rights - with the realease of their Footy Inquest Show (or whatever its called) on Monday nights with Craig Hutchison.

I'll back it in that show goes gangbusters for 9, even with that doofus Hutchison hosting it.

I rang Austar this morning to cancel our acct and they said they were in negotiation to find a new provider for the footy. I'll hang on a bit longer to see what happens.

I just rang foxtel to cacel my account and he said that they have lost around 50,000 subscribers so far.

He did not mention anything about a new provider being negotiated so beware rosy, they are likely to say anything to halt the avalanche of cancelations.

??? Who would the new "provider" be ? ESPN ? Not likely. C7 ? Don't think that can happen under the terms of the rights agreement.

Who ?

There was some discussion yesterday that the AFL were looking at jumping on board to fill the gap left by Fox Footy's demise. Demetriou said they were looking into setting up their own pay tv channel but was non-committal on the timing for such.

At least this should get around these disgraceful anti-siphoning laws as the AFL wouldn't be dealing with another party but will be just exploiting its own intellectual property.

They had mistakenly watched the wrong AFL grand final.

How it happened is that Fox Footy, the now-defunct pay television channel, showed a preamble to the West Coast-Sydney grand final hosted by Matthew Campbell and Wayne Carey on Saturday morning.

Fox was required to stop its coverage and show something else. What they broadcast was the 2005 grand final, won by Sydney in a thriller over West Coast,

Sorry to be the dissenting voice here but many, many, many more do not have Fox Footy than do have it. For most of us .. we couldnt care less. Never liked the idea of paying to watch the Tigers on TV.

Gotta say tho, i catch it when we are up in QLD each year and there are some good shows on it. Not worth the money tho.

Agreed Azz. You cant miss what you never had in the first place. I would be happy if all games were free to air, which is seeming like a greater possibility at the moment.

Any discussion programs would be fizzers as no genuine criticism of the AFL would be permitted.

With you as well AZZ and TD. Pay TV is disgracefully priced and lacks the courage if its own convictions. The best thing to happen was Channel 9 losing the rights if we end up with free to air of all eight games each week, even if some are at 2am in Qld :hihi

I'm still to be convinced that having AFL was just strategy to Ch9 to shore up a protective environment for it's already big investment in NRL - as long as it cost them much (nett), then it would have been better than what would have been eroded if they had not had it. Now Ch9 have price the AFL product up so much, it will be difficult for Ch7 and 10 to make a quid from it, giving Ch9 advantages in other areas.

I am going to seriously miss it and to me it was worth every cent. Am shattered it is gone, really shattered. CAnt see footy season being the same anymore without it.

Devastated. At least when I came home hammered on Saturday night, about 4 in the morning saw Clinton close off hte channell. Again shattered.
