PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

WARNING: This story has nothing to do with actual football but is a personal story about converting someone to supporting the Tigers.

I was dating a girl who has a keen Crows supporter, to the point where her car was named ‘Benny’, after Benny Hart. The first game of football we watched together was the Tiger victory over the Crows in 06 known as the ‘basketball c*ap’ match. It was a frosty night in the household.

We had been dating for a while and we started talking about getting married. We were joking about children and I had taken a firm line that I didn’t want a divided household. The kids are free to follow whatever sport they liked, but if they follow AFL the message from the parents will be consistent. Having grown up in the 80’s and early 90’s I’ve just frozen on the outer wing of the VFL park, Western Oval or Kardina Park watching us lose too many times to have a divided household. So we agreed that if we get married she would convert to Richmond.

Anyway, so before Christmas on a visit back to Australia I was in the Tigers Den store at Punt Road Oval buying presents for my Richmond supporting brother when I saw the Tiger jumpers for females. I had and inspiration and purchased it and tucked it away.

Then in the new year we were on holiday in the South Coast of NSW, and we were walking along a bush track when he came across this beautiful cliff top lookout overlooking the bay. And I thought I had found the perfect place.

The next day while my girlfriend had an after lunch nap, I snuck back up to the lookout and hid an esky with a bottle of champagne and the Tiger jumper. I came back to the house and woke her and suggested we go for a walk. She complained most of the way there because she had just woken up but finally I got her back to the look out.

So my strategy was to ask the question and I had three additional incentives hidden to close the deal:
1. The ring in my pocket
2. A bottle of champagne hidden in the bush
3. A Tiger jumper hidden underneath the champagne.

Anyway finally got her to the place and I got down on one knee pulled out the ring, yadda, yadda, and she said yes. Then I pulled out the champagne from the secret hiding spot. So we enjoyed a drink for about 10 minutes.

Finally I said, “oh, there is just one more thing, you will be needing THIS now”, and pulled out the Tiger jumper.

So that’s how I converted one more to the cause, and she still gets to call the car Benny.
