New Richmond coach Terry Wallace says it's not lost on the Tigers' playing group that the club which successfully recruited Brad Ottens during the off-season is Richmond's opening round opponent.
Wallace believes the club should use the fact Ottens was lured to a club which 'might be a premiership side, rather than the wooden-spooners' as a motivational spur.
"When we were down and out, sides were quite happy to pick over our carcass," Wallace said about the Tigers of 2004 which lost their last 14 matches.
"When you have a look at Brad Ottens, the situation was there, our club was down and Geelong were very, very happy to jump in as quick as what they can and suggest to him that he'd be better off playing in what might be a premiership side, rather than the wooden-spooners," Wallace said at Punt Road on Tuesday.
"I would think that our guys should take that as offensive about where we sit in comparison to them."
Wallace said Ottens - a Richmond player since 1998 - had indicated to him during the off-season his willingness to stay at Punt Road.
"It had been mentioned that Brad wanted change … In the conversations that I had with him - and that was only two - in both the conversations he suggested to me that he wanted to stay at the Richmond Football Club and it was only when money came in to play that his mind changed," Wallace said.
"We were pretty disappointed to lose a player that we'd planned to have around the place. We then went into Plan B. When he did go, we have to get draft selections for him and pick up a couple of other players.
"We think we've balanced ourselves up pretty well but it's not lost to the boys that the club that decided to target him was our opposition first up."
Wallace denied he would need to tell his player to 'keep their cool' in their first match against their former teammate.
"Most of the guys are friends with Brad," he said. "They don't sort of see it from that aspect of it. I think they see it as more of a slap in the face for them as a footy club."

and
I bloody hate the Footy show, but I noticed Newman wasn't too happy with the Cats Boom recruit's form. He's under a bit of pressure poor old Brad.
Wasn't one of the reasons this bloke left Richmond was that he wanted to go and play in a side that was going to win premierships? Didn't he slur our club by seemingly blaming others for the state of our club, and not shouldering some of the responsibilty?
He has had a fair time to prove his worth amongst a so called "Premiership chance"...and what has he done?
Did anyone see his stats from last week?
Talk about a pea-heart.
Cheers!
