Ottens or Simmonds / How good is Simmons? [Merged]

Simmonds at his best has played as an outside running ruckman. He pinchhits at chf a bit like a poor man's Justin Charles sans medication (we hope). I believe Wallet wants him for that running ruckman loose man type role. TW likes a flowing game and a loose ruckman can create an overlap for other running players. Doesn,t play like Otto at all. Almost the opposite a bit like a big wingman.

Another good prophetic call there JD!

I admit to not seeing to many of Fremantles games this year, so how good is Simmons?  Looking at 2004 statistics, and obviously statistics dont mean everything, Simmons doesn't look to be half of what Ottens is.  It appears Simmons may have spent more time in the forward line than Ottens over the year but he only kicked a handful more goals anyway.

I am really very disappointed Ottens is leaving.  Regardless of his supposed softness, he is easily in the best 3-4 ruckmen in the competiton, and how much better it would have been to have Ottens in there with Simmons as backup, and showing the door to Hall, and keeping Stafford for guest appearances.  We are giving up alot and 2 first round picks is a great risk.  Well its probably close to a done deal now, we simply cannot afford to keep Ottens it appears.  I dont know why people are so harsh on Ottens, almost every player out there would accept $500K over $300K, wouldnt you?

Ottens is was and always will be softer than a big dairy queen as its melting down your arm.  One of the main purposes of a ruckman is to intimidate.  I'm rapt Ottens is going, rapt outa me brain.

Simmonds is a decent to pretty good ruckman who is willing to put his body in, he has always impressed me from his early years at Melbourne for doing this.  I really wanted him back when Melb put him on the table.

October 6 2004, not a bad post that one

In spite of giving yourself a wrap ;), I'll give you that TS, you were a hard campaigner in getting rid of the big Donut.
Good summation of Simmo too. Well done.

Some good reading on this thread - even the Josh Carr stuff. THe early call was that Port were going to get jibbed and from memory they ended up getting 3 picks for him.

Who was the Johnson claw was talking about - the Johnson that now plays for Frea?
