Our captain

Down by 20 odd points against North in the first quarter Newman was the guy who ran fwd took the mark and kicked a great goal from 50 to get the team going. At that point I thought, "hmmmm, nice effort by the captain." I'm not a fan at all of him but at least he tried to do something.

He didn't ask to be captain so I certainly don't hold any grudges against him for it. I just find it funny that a club would pick a very nice, polite guy as captain who is just not that good of a player, has such little presence on the field and who at some point in the future will probably be struggling for his spot like he was last year. At least Maxwell is physical so there is some presence/inspirational factor for the young guys on the field (and let's be honest who else on Collingwood's list could you make Captain?) but Newman is just....... well.... bland. He is a footballing "rice cracker".

Yeah pretty much agree.

I think media wise and PR wise Newman has been excellent. Hasn't look under pressure once, has spoke with poise and intelligence.

But I think his onfield form has been pretty average this year. He is giving his man too much leg rope. And Jarrod Moore should never have outmarked Newman on Sunday. Doesn't attack with the ball in his hands.

are you sure about that?

I was prepared to give him a chance but after the "its only 3 losses" crap he came out with after the dogs match it was pathetic coming from a so called captain

What did you want him to say, we lost the 3 most important games of the season, our season is *smile*, our coach is *smile* and the players are mentally fragile! Seriously mate, what else could he say in that situation and he was right, if we beat Melbourne and North suddenly we would of been 2-3, season alive! Get a grip.

Newy's been fine imo.

Not real sure about the Doorman & Bootstudder though! ::)

Who was our on field leader against the swans?
The one who attacked the footy, his opponent as though his life depended on it?
Whose actions said "follow me lads".
Daniel Jackson.

Oops. i better get outa here!

Newy seems a quiet personality compared to the old stagers who the media keep giving attention.
He'll look better once they've all been pensioned off as he'll be in charge of a young group.

Agree with this. Other stand-out captains have grown into the role - think Kirk and Kelly at Swans.

I think I vaguely agree with all of that. I just don't picture Daniel Jackson as a captain. But you're right, he was instrumental in the third quarter getting clearances at will.

Bit of poor form in this thread that is more associated with our club being down in the dumps I suspect and as a result the microscope being put on Newman. I recall many posts voicing initital surprise at how well Newman handled captaincy early days.

For supporters who love our club, I'd like to think we would be a little more resppectful and appreciative of how tough it must be for Newman and how he gives us his all.

IF some people's opinion (from the outside mind you) is correct and he should not be Captain, is it his fault he was the best of the lot we had for the role? Or are people going to go as far as to insist Lids should be Captain, the same Lids who has struggled bitterly for form and to improve this year on his previous year.

Newman's got a bloody tough gig, and sure, he's not our most talented or exciting player. However he gives 100% everytime and that is why he is Captain, along with the fact behind the scenes he is very dedicated to the players and their welfare and has been for years. He is a leader in most senses of the word (more than any other's offer for one reason or another anyway) and he bleeds yellow and black.

I was standing right in front of Newman when we won that game against North and the elation he felt and the aggressive way he celebrated the win showed how much he loves this club. He deserves more respect and time to grow into the role than he is being afforded for mine.

We are developing some highly talented and skilled potential franchise players (Cotchin, Lids, Jack etc) who will be more attractive options if they develop fully sure, Newman was always the best link man till they were ready.

Let's cut Newman some slack for being the best leader at a club with a less than ideal list and culture for producing leaders.

its a losers mentality which most of our past captains have always had aswell

what could he of said? well he should of put it on the players etc to keep the season alive

it all just sounded weak and not something you would hear from a good leader
