Games that dearly cost us finals berths !

1981 !
Round 17 Richmond 115 lost Fitzroy 116 ! Ladder 5th Fitz - 56 pts Rfc 7th 52 pts, Reversal win would have us in. A free kick not pad to Bartlett in the square, play on they kicked a goal 27min mark of last qtr... game over. Finals over !

1994 ! 3 games
We miss the finals by percentage 9th curse
Rd 21 we kick 2.8 in the last quarter against Hawks. So many set shots missed that day within 30 mtrs we lose 11.23 89 to 18.9 117.
R23 & Rd 24 were we had a good buffer on our percentage we lose at princess park to Carlton rd 23 161 to Rich 48. Rd 24 Rich 95 Geel 171. What made it worse that Scumwood also dropped their last 2 games & pinch the game in Rd 22 by 3 pts

not the saints game from my mind. we were the better team on the day and should have won, but lost in a close one. these things happen all the time

it's the games you should win but don't that hurt. definitely the centenery/carlton game. losing to them give you the "we don't deserve to be there feeling" being such a big occasion and against a weaker side

also is costliest a word? i thought it would just be costly?

Adelaide game - destiny still in our own hands, everyone had us as some sort of chance and to come out with a performance like that we don't deserve to play finals.

Except even if we played close to our best we wouldn't have won that game. Adelaide played very well that day.

Our costliest in terms of ladder position was clearly the Aints loss, our worst loss emotionally was the Blues.

Conceding 3 goals in the last 3 minutes against the Dogs, and Kelvin Moore hitting the post from 40m out directly infront against the Saints. Without those we'd be on 52pts and easily in the 8.

No costliest is correct. To substitute costly, the thread would need to be called "Our most costly loss" ...

by the way ... St Kilda for mine. We had the chance to break the back of a number of close games and develop some self belief.

the last 21 games plus any game this year tiva and sarge played in

I sought of Agree. The games we didn't turn up to play in - they are the ones that cost us.
Mind you it's quite simple and easy to explain how this happens and it happens to all clubs not just Richmond.
1) When teams are on the way up their good is good but they are inconsistant.
2) When a team are at the top they are good and consistant.
3) When teams are on the way down they are good at times "like their best" but can't produce it consistantly
4) When you are on the bottom, your good games are when you have been competitive for four quarters and you win the odd upset.

Where is Richmond at? I would have to say we are at step 1) and not step 4) for a change! Or are we!

Q. Who said this recently? "We are good at beating the teams below us but we need to start beating the teams above us" this was said on the radio? Answer Below.

The Answer is Jeff Hogg !!!

He said this on 3LO many, many, many years ago after 3 wins over Footscray, Fitzroy and St Kilda and even back then the RFC were saying we might just make the finals.
My point is that although things are positive we have been down this track many, many times before but have we learnt our lessons that history has taught us or at least shown us! I hope so, for my daughters sake!

How's your maths lids3? We'd be on 48pnts NOT 52!

Agree, whilst we should have beaten St Kilda as it was a close game, the Adelaide loss was knowlingly an 8 point game, particularly given the result today. If we had won we would now be ahead of Adelaide. The loss was probably our worst performance for the year. When we win these games we will know that we have arrived as a club.

Here are some from 1996 a year we had a percentage of 117 and still finishe 9th

Round 4 1996
On Sat Apr 20
Hawthorn v Footscray Dogs lead Hawks by 27 points in the mud at the Western Oval with 6 minutes to play only for the Hawks to scrounge a draw with Pritchard running into an open goal and kicking the match tying point.
Sunday April 21
Richmond v Sydney game at VFL Park. Game is moved from the MCG due to centenary celebrations
Game begins with Maxfield kicking the first goal in the opening minute against us just to make my blood boil yet we seem to settle the better and hold a 21 point lead at 3 qt time. Plugger kicks 4 from 5 Sydney goals in the last quarter and we kick a succession of points. Richo is then penalised for shepherding when Daffy's goal bounces through and we lose 10 11 71 to 9 16 70.
To make matters worse the following week Chris Naish marks 35 out on a slight angle at the Hickey stand end of KP and precedes to miss after the siren with us losing 91-88. Hawthorn later in the year at KP have a Tony Woods ball slither through for a goal in the mud after it looked like a point for 20 of the 30 metres it needed to travel. Hawks win 74-72.
Round 22 Hawks beat Dees 102-101 after Melb had the last 3 scoring opps all which yielded no score to keep the score in favour of the Hawks as the next day in our must win game against the Roos we hold a 2 point lead at 3 qt time but the Roos kick 9 goals to 4 in the last qt to end our season and get the Hawks in by 2 points. Ironically we thrashed the Hawks 98-51 and 114-73 in our two encounters during the year.
