Our draft picks.

Yes I'm very silly, for some strange reason I think a lower draft is actually on the basis of sheer logic actually a better draft pick. And I don't believe in throwing away a top ten draft pick to secure a dud (God as I read what I'm typing, I realise you're correct, I never realised what a fool I was!!!). I mean lets face it, everyone was cueing up to get rid of their top 10 draft picks, I just thank God we had as smooth an operator as Miller to get rid of ours for us! (they do have a habit of making draft day very suspenseful and exciting - personally I don't need that kind of tension!). And of course you are totally right about the type of player that 'we' all want. Another flanking on ball midget. I know I'll be spewing if we miss out out on one of them and we have to pick Thorpe or a Riewoldt instead. But no chance of that now though. Yep roll on draft day - I'm happy ;D

Im sure if it was 11th to 15th you'd be going on about giving up a Top 11 pick. Seriously!

At pick 8 we had a half a chance that one of the absolute elite (especially one of the talls) might slip through to us in the draft. At 13 we have buckleys chance. I still think that a top ten pick is a precious commodity...I guess I'm just funny that way...

LMAO

The worst thing is that after a bad year where we experienced four 100 point beltings, and the fact that we are sooooo far from any type of success, and the fact that we are supposedly in a rebuilding stage, that our first pick won't come until 13 !!!  12 players, in a super draft, will be picked ahead of us.

Us finishing 9th was detrimental to our rebuilding, yet we decided to further downgrade our pick to 13, for a player (Polak) that is if anything average.  A club like Freo would not give him away if he was any good, especially when they are therabouts for a flag.

if you can garuntee pick 8 will be a better player than pick 13 then your argument has legs but the draft reality says that is not necasarily so.

pick1 the best player
pick2 the 2nd best player
pick3 the third best player
pick4 the fourth best player
pick..... so on and so on

wasnt Judd pick 3? must mean he's the third best player from that draft :P

Very silly post, does that mean you are happy to give up pick 1 for pick 61. Off course not. The probabilities matter and quite clearly players at the top of the draft play more games on average than players from the bottom end. Its not until about pick 50 that the games played returns become random.

Is it possible then to pass, on pick 58, then use pick 60?

Dunno, but would make a mockery of the rules if that were possible.

Right so far.

Once you pass you are out of the draft.

Edit: Apologies to jb03, original post was missing draft selections #100+ from 1992 and has been amended.

Well we can rest easy, according to that graph, Pick 8 has averaged around 57 games and Pick 13 around 50. Interestingly Pick 6 is under 30 games. I think that graph shows clearly that the first 3 or 4 picks in any draft are the best bets for success, and a mixed bag for maybe the next 20 picks or so, and so on. I just think on this basis that dropping from Pick 8 to Pick 13 will not hurt that much. Sure a player might drop to 8 but unless that is a 1-4 then the guarantees are no better than a Pick 13 anyway. Considering that there might be a very slight chance that a top 4 would drop to 8, would that outweigh the fact that we've now picked up Polak, who I believe on perecentage has a better chance of being a success than an 8th pick in the draft (certainly in the short-term, 3 to 4 years).

The only thing that was going to work in this trade was offloading pick 8 as Collingwood wouldnt have budged otherwise. Under that circumstance we had to trade our pick 8 for any chance of picking up Polak. The only improvement the way I see it is that maybe we didnt give up our 3rd round pick. Reckon we could have convinced Fremantle to make it a 4th rounder considering they were desperate to get that 8th pick. Other than that very well traded.

We should pass all the way down to pick 105 and use it. Any player taken at 105 averages 168 games for the club.

Agree pick 6 has been a bit of an anomaly. Doggies took Williams in the Deledio draft which hasn't helped.

Good to see that Polack has just about reached the average number of games for a fourth round pick and is still only 22. Anything he does from 07 onwards is a bonus ;D
Hopefully he can slot in well with our mob of youngsters and take the step to becoming a consistent senior footballer. 70 games at age 22 means he has completed his football apprenticeship.
The disappointment of missing Freos finals campaign this year should be a huge spur to motivate him into getting the best out of himself for the rest of his career and ensuring he never misses out again.
