Our National Draft Selections

Yeah, I'm starting to agree with you spook. Seems like there's a good chance of getting a good mid with our second pick and also likely a few talls worth a spec later on.

What chance one of the good hff's makes it to 30ish?

Mids: Swallow, Bennell, Gaff, Atley, Heppell, Caddy, Smith, Polec, Wallis, Parker, Hallahan (11)
Rucks: Gorringe, Lycett (2)
Forwards: Day, Darling, Lynch, Cook, Pitt, Harper, Lamb, Prestia (8)
Backs: Jacobs, Smedts, Harvey, McCarthy, Watson (5)

Is only 26 players. Are there others people can see breaking in there and giving us any chance at all of getting Lamb, Harper or even Pitt or is that just wishful thinking? Any out of place in that group and likely to go later?

Disco - you can add Tape, Green, Andreoli, Conca, Wilson, Young, Cripps, Guthrie, Karnezis, Michie, Fasolo, Chalwell, Mitchell who are a chance to break into the top 30-35. Many people saying it's very even up to about pick 40-45, so would be a good idea if we considered using our comp pick this year. Say for instance we are very keen on about 6 players who could all realistically go bw 25-35. using the comp pick would ensure we snare 2 of them. all depending on how keen we are on these players in the end. when do clubs have to state whether they are using the comp pick this year?

Not sure Harry. Was actually wondering the same thing. It could mean the difference between 29 and something like 37 or 38.

Using the before mention pre-requisites Navy, what do you think of Josh Walker.

IMO he has gone under the radar a bit, moves well leads hard, is a good mark/kick
and looks the perfect size for a key forward.

Not sure where he lies within this draft but he is definately one I would like to see
in the yellow & black next year.

Yeah looks a decent prospect doesnt he Uncle.

Kicking still looks to need a bit of work & would like to check out his movement a bit more.

If we could check those things off he could well be worth a pick a bit later on as he would play a role that is needed in our team.

Friday November 5, 2pm – Nomination of Use of Compensatory Selection by Clubs that Lose an Uncontracted Player to Gold Coast FC. Adelaide Crows FC (end of round one), Brisbane Lions FC (end of round one), Hawthorn FC (end of round one) and Port Adelaide FC (round two) each have the option to nominate to use a compensatory selection.

We definitely have a need for a type like Eades Jimmeh. Looks better than Nahas to me - can keep his feet for a start.

Agree with the spec talls later in the draft Disco.

In WA alone there are a couple of chaps running round WAFL colts who would be worth a look at.

As a Claremont man, one kid who has showed a bit is Anton Hamp. Decent size, would be 192 cm plus although needs to fill out a little, and a promosing forward. Still some way to go, but very consistent player. Would be a great rookie get if he lasts that long.

I think this is a good move - the pick will be worth more in 2012 when they don't have the extra picks for Gold Coast or GWS. Plus 10 youngsters have already been taken out of the draft pool this year so our pick would be equivalent of a mid 30s pick instead of a top 20 pick in 2012.

Frankly you can't complan that the club is trading away the future when we are saving future high draft picks.

Best available mid at #6 will be the best option.

Combined with Grigg who should both be certain starters for round 1 will be the best off-season outcome for the club IMO.

Doesn't look like we're considering our compo pick this year so...

If Gorringe/Lycett are around for our 2nd pick I reckon we snag one (highly unlikely they'll be around I know) to fill a ruck need otherwise we rookie another ruck come December.

Otherwise from our 2nd pick onwards, we pick a KPF, 2 x mids, sml fwd in no particular order just whoever is best available to fill those positions at the time of our respective picks.

I wouldn't mind us getting a mid, but I'd actually rather get one with more defensive skills than the ability to run forward and kick a goal.

I think Collingwood showed you need a balance of midefielders between those that can run forward, and those that can play back (ideally both of course).

While we need more avenues to goal, I think we have neglected defensive midfield pressure in recent times.

I wouldn't mind us adding to our ginger army and grabbing Geelong Falcons youngster Cameron Johnston late.

Has good speed and is a lovely long, straight kick of the footy.

I am of the thought that Heppell is our first pick if he is there, if not Caddy for me. Polec looks to be a tad timid at times.

Hopefully one Lycett, Harper, Prestia or Tape falls through to 29.

Then I think we take a few flyers on needs. Small forward with x-factor. Ruckman with big body. Good kicks of the footy and blokes with some mongrel in them.

I hope we dont go for a ruckman...you can win games with an avg ruckman..stock up on mids

since 2001 the following Rucks have been 1st rnd picks :

Kruezer, Leuenberger, Vickery, Mcevoy, Lobbe, Hampson,Ryder, meeson, pattison, Wood, Bradley, spaanderman, Laycock, Mcintosh, brooks,

Of them I would suggest that only Kruezer, Ryder and Mcintosh look like being players, Vickery is to early to tell, Hampson has played a few good games as has Leuenberger.

The rest are plodders or out and out duds. ie Spaanderman.

Even the ones that can play are bit are not going to win you games the way the games is played today. A great ruck player is a rare beast...

Soooo please dont draft a ruck.

Heppel your preferred option?

Him and Polek have good height for mids.

Why is the draft so late in the year?

Just wondering why the national/rookie/PSD are so late in Nov/Dec each year?

It means whoever is drafted, particularily if they need to join the club from interstate only start training in January, which is about a month and a half before the Pre-season competition.

This just doesnt make sense to me. The less talented kids maybe wouldn't play in the firsts all year anyway, but the top draftees will play, without proper conditioning and training.

Can't it be arranged for the end of October?
