Our National Draft Selections

2012 is already being discussed as a Superdraft and it will be the first draft that goes back to some sense of order.
If your comment here is only halfway correct Scooper then it would be vital to hold the compo pick till this draft or similar. We've still got plenty of youngsters in need of development and an opportunity from the 09 draft. There's obviously another bunch of kids coming in a few weeks that will also need plenty of development purely because G.C. is taking the cream and the rest of the clubs will be scrounging around amongst the reasonable leftovers. G.W.S. will do the same next year.
If there's any chance of an uncompromised superdraft coming up in a few years time the footy department would be criminally negligent to not hold the option of chasing two elite first rounders purely to bolster their possibly reasonable ordinaries this year.
Gold Coast were smart enough to trade back into some of those compo picks so they can blend their list with a staggered intake of the best they can possibly get we'd be morons not to do similar. Our list isn't near finals mode, in another two years time we might start sniffin around the mark and we'll be perfectly positioned to slip in some elite kids to help grow an era.

Only problem is if the other clubs hold onto their compo picks from this year and next (more compo picks to come from GWS) the used compo picks themselves could well stretch into the mid 20's anyway.

What do you do??

Wait 2 years to use a compo pick in what may be a better draft or use it now on what may be a fairly even draft (between picks 15-35 or so) and have a good couple years of development in that player by the 2012 draft??

Will be interesting to see how the clubs tackle this.

I think we are in the boat/timeframe to get as many kids as possible - more kids drafted, the more chance of uncovering super talent.

On the other hand, the pick may hold extra trade value next year if we bank it for now. What to do, what to do??

Wouldn't expect the Doggies to do much either, they look to have nearly filled their book already.

Yep, hardly worth making a mock up of it now too much work, our later picks won't be contending with any of Adelaide, Doggies, Essendon, Gold Coast, and looking like Sydney, Brisbane and West Coast too.

Last year netted us Webberley and Nason, not bad for two late picks.

I think we should use the compo pick this year. Looking at some mock drafts there is a good chance that players like Green, Conca, Newton, Prestia, Jacobs, Parker, Fasolo, Andreoli, Michie, Wilson, Tape, Hallahan, Githrie will be available at about pick 30. Getting 2 of these players will be a good result. A Green Jacobs combo would be great.

Agreed Harry, am starting to think about the bird in the hand. Your Green Jacobs combo also doesn't include the second round pick five slots later.

Did a little sheet for my own info today listing players that have been mentioned and assigning the AFL 25 top picks to them. Note that AFL lists Jacobs, Tape, Hallahan and Guthrie in their top 25.
From that you get players like the ones mentioned above plus Pitt, Gilbee, as well as talls like Watson (AA CHB), Cook (AA CHF), Mitchell, Solly.

It would be a tragedy if we pass on the pick this year and those players go between our first and second picks, remembering that the Lions will probably use all of their five picks in that range from 24 to our second.
ATM Lions have picks 25 and 27 as well as 2, 3 and 5 compensation picks if GC and us don't use our picks this year. Assumes Geelong (1) and North (4) use theirs.

Each to their own choices but Caddy+Cook+Prestia is very possible.

Edit: Sorry Lions compo pick for Brennan was traded back so only four picks in that area.

The compo picks can be held for five years so there's no screaming urgency to use them first year the draft opens up, who knows we may also get a pick off GWS next year as well so then we could chase three kids in the top twenty a few years down the track.
One of the Tiges biggest problems in the last thirty years has been recruiting for instant gratification, desperately trying to grab players that will help see us jump back into finals contention A.S.A.P.
First time ever we're properly seperating the coaching from the recruiting/ list management areas.
Coaches only get a two or three year contract and have to be seen to be doing something successfull.
List managers need to build a squad for today, tomorrow and next week as well.
There'd be something very sweet about seeing the Tiges reaching finals fringe in say 2012 then a bit better in 2013 and find themselves with four picks inside the top forty, perhaps a pick 14 first rounder 19 compo 20 compo then their second rounder at 34.

I agree with this post. Also a club looking to rebuild will trade for our compo pick as it will be of more use to them, and we can pick a est player that will push us towards a flag.

Phantom, do you think Karnezis will last until pick #47??

Mike Sheehan thinks he will be picked up in the top 30.

He is an interesting prospect (191 cm) with good skills and is an accurate shot for goal.

"Karnezis played eight games (excluding finals) for Oakleigh in the 2010 TAC Cup, booting 28 goals and averaging 19 disposals, 54 per cent of themcontested." taken from http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/draft-prospect-to-utilise-soccer-smarts-20101016-16ofr.html

As I've written previously, I see Karnezis marginally behind Barden.

In all reality, Barden should be gone before our 2nd pick and Karnezis shortly after.

I probably should've had Karnezis in green rather than pink.

Merely looking at options and where each would sit in our team structure.

S'pose we'll find out on the day.

Fair enough Phantom.

I just hope we don't pick up Lynch at #6 and if we draft a forward that we utilise a 2nd or 3rd round pick at best.

For my mind, 3 key areas.

Midfield - Caddy / Gaff - pick #6
CHF - Mitchell - pick #27/30
Goal-sneak - Gilbee / Lamb - pick #27/30

If these come off, we can walk away happily.

Do you reckon we would go for a CHF in this draft Phanto? If I assume the mail on Miller is correct, we seem to have a number of options for that position. Griffith, Miller, Post, Vikery.

I'd agree with it if Mitchell was chosen as part of a "best available" approach, but I do wonder if we have more pressing needs.

I read a few phantom drafts and saw Max Otten get some wraps, ie. very similar to his brother. I saw Andy play a couple of times as a junior and was moderately impressed, of course he went on to finish 2nd in the rising star award in his second year before doing a knee at the start of this season. I checked out Max's highlights vid and he seems to go alright aswell, good size, decision making, skills. Think he'd be a good get in the second or third round.

Ottens would be fine for that W/HBF role, but I do prefer Heppell & Guthrie over him.

I suppose it's what's available at what pick.

CHF is the key position in a grand final. Must have one to win.

Griffith is likely but, until he proves he is over regular injury, an alternative is  needed.

Miller is a 1-2 year waste of time but I can put up with him as a rookie.

Recommended Post as a spare parts tall to Greg & Francis before his drafting. He is a good spare parts tall. A premiership CHF, no.

Vickery will be a very good tall forward/ruckman sitting in a fp as a foil for the shorter Jack Reiwoldt. But Vickery is not a CHF.

You may remember Travis Cloke in 2004. He was the elite CHF of the TAC that year, although he went later as F/S.
St Kilda's Reiwoldt was an elite player in his draft year.

The great CHFs - Hart, Brereton, et al.
They commanded CHF as elite players.

Currently our team structure does not have a solid CHF.
That's why CHF needs to be a priority for us.

Having both Griffiths & Mitchell would lock CHF in for us.

However, there are Bussey & Patton at the ER for next year.
Both appear to be excellent key forward prospects.
Unfortunately, GWS may grab them both before we get a shot at them.

I don't pretend for a moment to be as knowledgeable about football as you are, but on the surface you seemed to have made a very good case for selecting Lynch with our first draft pick if he is available (Day also if by some miracle he was available). Not every player can be elite, but you'd want a fair spread of them in your spine, especially in the CHF position to win a premiership. But if you truly want that you've got to be prepared to use your most valuable draft picks. I always get frustrated with people that think you can just 'manufacturer' a CHF with a late pick when it's the hardest role on the field to play, and when logically picking an elite junior in that position is the most likely strategy to fill that need. So why not Lynch if again as you've pointed out our likelihood to get any comparable key forward talent next season (and beyond if we improve as to be hoped and expected) is out of reach?

2010-T. Cloke
2009-C. Mooney
2008-J. Roughhead (?- I guess he and Franklin switched)
2007-C. Mooney
2006-A. Hansen
2005- ?- Swans- Hall and Mickey O were their KFs- neither really a CHF.

Best available midfielder thanks. That excludes Polec. He may rack them up but is way too one sided and once the opposition figure him out he won't be influential enough. I would love nothing more than another elite inside midfielder. Once we get a few more preseaons into the midfield opposition sides will not look forward to playing us. It'll be "oh crap, we have to play Richmond this week."

Best case scenario for us is if West Coast goes Polec - IMO he would be better suited to their bigger ground. Like Heppell, Polec's stocks rose greatly at the business end of the footy season.

That would make the Lion's decision on pick #5 that little bit harder...Gaff or Heppell or maybe even Atley??

Shame the likelihood of this happening is'nt that crash hot cause I would love Heppell at Richmond.

Or they might say if Griffith doesn't make it, "stop the one man forward line of Reiwoldt, you stop Richmond."
