If the best player at the club was mute or deaf or both, would you still appoint him captain on the basis that he is the best player? I didn't think so....
Me? I like the idea of a steady reliable workman as captain, not a show pony or glam boy, or a megastar like Judd but someone stoic, reliable, earthy, talented enough to maintain his spot in the team week in week out and do the occasional stellar performance, captain's-goal-saved-the-game sort of stuff. My fella Bowden is one such player and Newman another. That's what I liked about Mattie Knights, he was honest and an obvious leader and while his career wasn't back-to-back stellar moments, he did some grand team lifting things.
