This morning, on SEN, David Parkin spoke about Brendan Fevola.
The gist of his feelings were that Fevola was a player of poor character, that could play football, but did not have the leadeship qualities that a coach would be looking for when building a premiership team.
He said that Fevola could play football, but he wasn't the type that you'd want around a club when developing a premiership side.
Parkin said that had he remained at Carlton he would have got rid of Fevola. He said that Brittain had tried to get rid of Fevola but had been stimied in his attempts to eject him. He said that Fevola was a nice enough bloke, but just an ordinary player with no special qualities.
Parkin also said that there will be about half a dozen teams that would queue up to get hold of Fevola, when Carlton lets him go, because they'll feel that he can play footy and that they can change him. He sniggered when he said this.
David Parkin coached 4 premiership sides. 1978 at Hawthorn, 1981, 82 & 95 at Carlton.
He put the toughness back into Carlton that had been missing for most of the 70s.
Fevola kind of reminds me of an early 70s recruit that we got from Carlton called "Roderick" McLean. Some of you might remember Ricky McLean. McLean was a 6' FF, tough, undisciplined. Can't remember, now, how we came by him. Anyway, Ricky lasted a year or two. He involved some of the other players in some unfortunate incidents. His highlight was being one of the players that let the Tigers down in the 1972 GF. Tommie Hafey & Graeme Richmond, after 72, basically let McLean rot in the 2nds from that date on. My memorable highlight of him was the way he went about knucking about half a dozen Swans players and, I think, an umpire in his last reserves game. Entertainment value 10, team contribution zero.
My feeling on Fevola is that he may seem to many a short term prospect for a couple of years, while waiting for juniors to develop. However this short term feeling is overridden by:
1. Fevola on the list will prevent us from possibly having that extra quality junior that may come up for us.
2. That his influence in the club may undermine the development of the juniors about the club. Juniors will see this person with negative personal qualities getting a game before them, very disruptive. Look at Carlton.
3. 25yo leopards don't change their spots. The Fevola that is at Carlton would be the Fevola that plays at Richmond.
Greg Miller is now fully responsible for recruiting at Richmond.
There is no Beck, now, to accept the blame.
How we judge Greg, now, will be dependent on his ability to recruit the right personalities with which to build a premiership team.
I wouldn't like to see Greg harm his reputation by making poor short term decisions, such as recruiting Fevola, or his like.
