Pat Bowden. I.L.U

He had Mooney for a lot of the Geelong game. Both Polo and Hyde slapped Mooney off the ball and it seems that he was being arked up by our lads.

P. Bowden really towelled up Mooney when on him. I got the feeling that Cameron was fightened of Patrick.

When he plays in the backline, just like on Saturday against the transvestites, he reminds me of Gaspar when he puts it on the boot, his skill level is found wanting.

I think thats a bit harsh.  Twice he was under extreme pressure when kicking out from the backline and unfortunately both times they went straight down the throat of the opposition.  Generally I think his skills are quite good.  Good pickup, he has ability and I think it will begin to show with a bit more time.

Cheers

He can also do some freaky thinks.

LOL...agreed RROFO...he is a bit freaky on the thinking at times. ;) :hihi

Nah, seriously, he's been quite serviceable so far, especially considering he was essentially a throwaway pickup.

I'm filing this post away GoodOne...just incase I ever need to present it as evidence in the Court Of Double Standards in cases regarding backmen under pressure... ;) ;D

I tend to agree with GPB...not necessarily in this instance, but as a generalisation...Patrick does turn the ball over a little too often for a bloke who really needs to make his consistent good disposal a feature of his game if he's to extend his career for a few years with us.

He has the skill level to improve in this area and I hope he can with a combination of good coaching and some application from him. Much like some of Joel's earlier years, it seems to be a question of slips in concentration rather than a serious skill deficiency.

Boy we must all be looking at different players. for mine Pat Bowden was a good player at the Bullies in 2004, was disappointed he could not go to the Tigers and did not get on with the new coach last year. He is NOT superstar material but a tireless worker bee who has kicked freaky goals, marked in defence when needed kicked more goals and has shown most of the time his skills are Good. The 1%ers also get unnoticed - I have watched every game but one on replay - some a few times over and P Bowden stands out.
As some have pointed out NOT bad for a 70s+ pick....

Useful at the moment but would struggle to make the starting 22 if we had a full list to pick from.To many yips in his game.

Funny, 3 or 4 years ago the same people making negative comments about Patrick were making it about Joel!

I'm not sold not patrick. An average player holding his spot in the team, nothing more or less.  For a sizeable bloke he definitely lacks ticker.  Time will tell, but at least we got him for a song which was quite a sweet deal.

He provided a nice block in our forward line to allow Hyde to kick his fourth.

PBowden is tall, mobile and skilful. His kicking is a bit "up-and-under" when the pressure is on but he usually finds his target anyway.

Like a lot of modern AFL players, he doesn't go where "angels fear to tread" instinctively but occasionally surprises all by screwing up his face and going anyway. We have plenty of those and most of them are getting better in this respect.

I rate him as a footballer but with one reservation. He is probably the laziest footballer I have ever seen. Joel was always described as "laconic" but Paddy is closer to bone idle lazy. The ABC covered a few Werribee games last year and he stood out for his lack of effort.

Luckily, Wallace is all over him on this. I was heartened when I attended a training session in January and he failed to lead because he thought, rightly, that the kick was going elsewhere. Wallace gave him heaps over this for a very long time, quite publicly.

When you have a list that lacks for mid-20yo mobile talls, who can get the ball, Pat Bowden comes as mannah from heaven.

agreed, servicable in lots of holes and can only get better.

Geez, I reckon a few people are being a bit too hard on him. In my opinion he has exceeded any expectations we could have had for him. He has been better than 15 other guys in the team on most occassions this year, i.e. in the best 5 players, and has comfortably held his spot. I thought that he may have been up and down with Coburg but at the moment he wouldn't even be close to being dropped. He was a steal and we should be pleased with his output so far. He cost us next to nothing in contract or draft picks and has rewarded us beyond what we gave up, so far.
I just love how some people who couldn't get a kick to save themselves in park footy love to bag any bloke who is not a superstar on our list.

He's been a good recruit, has 100% paid his way on the field even though he makes some pretty ordinary mistakes at times.

But like on the Nathan Foley thread the reality is his spot will eventually be under threat most probably by a player who hasn't even been recruited to the club yet. Serviceable enough for a few years to plug holes but will prove to be expendable when list management becomes an issue in years to come.

But I do like the guy and am not slagging him off. Just telling it like it is.

Ultimately every player's spot comes under threat. A football career doesn't last forever.
The aim is to make hay while the sun shines.

Agreed but if he can improve a little bit, and it won't take that much, his versatility will see him get a reasonable career. At this stage I would only trade/cut him if TW felt he wasn't getting anywhere with him - which I doubt would be the case.

Haha, Ill give you that one. Interestingly statistically Patrick is averaging 2.8 errors per match, which puts him as 11th on the clanger list. Richo is way ahead on 5.7.

As for 1%ers, P Bowden is averaging 3.2 which is 9th spot and the best of the forwards. Intrestingly the top 4 are J Bowden, D *smile*, R Hall & A Kellaway, which suggests the 1% calculation is weighted towards backman. This makes P Bowden's efforts even more impressive.

Where P Bowden appears to fall over is in contested possessions and tackles where he is close to the bottom. This may be why some see him as not performing to their liking, but I always maintain you dont need every player in the team to be in and under, you do need your outside players.

3 top players for average contested possessions are Tuck, Coughlan and Richo. Outstanding effort by Richo as a forward and really shows his worth in the team.

And no stats dont mean everything, but it is always interesting to look at the important stats such as errors, 1%ers and contested possessions.

Cheers

Patrick Bowden knows how to get his hands on the leather a lot; a couple of clangers goes with the way the game is currently played. I for one am happy that we got him as he can play at both ends of the ground. A good pick up, but obviously not 100% perfect (aren't we all ?) for some of the couch judges on PRE.
