PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Yes, I am feeling ok. After sitting down and having a good hard look at our season to date, I have actually come to the conclusion, that perhaps we are jumping the gun in relation to the uproar of T.Wallace and co. It seems we are actually travelling exactly how we should be, and exactly how Wallace wants us to be. His 2011 comments were actually a slap in the face to the current senior group and a warranted one at that. I think Terry’s biggest mistake thus far was that he himself had overrated our senior group of players, and has now finally realised how much they have let him down, and how inept they really are at leading a side and standing up when it counts. One of the reasons he chose Richmond over Hawthorn was that he believed we had a better group of senior players. To a degree that is understandable. We did have the likes of Richardson, J.Bowden(all-australian), Campbell, Coughlan, and the most important of all N.Brown(match winner). Over time though I believe Wallace has realised how mentally weak these players really are. Hence the recruitment of Graham, and his plead to Campbell to continue on for another year(he is the one that everyone seems to have forgotten. Was probably the only real leader on the field the club had at the time).

As long as we continue to be competitive as we have and don’t have any blow outs, it will help weed out the perpetrators and in 2 years time, the team will have a healthy balance of player ages and bodies. In 2 years time, the deledios, tamblings, raines etc will be in the mid age range, and will be seen as the leaders of the club. Hence it will allow for the youngsters coming through, the safe passage into senior football, without the need to win games off their own boot.

How ideal is the scenario that sees us win a game or two for the year, while remaining competitive in the others going down by the 20-30point mark at most. It gives us picks 1(potential superstar), pick 17 and 18. That will be 3 picks in the top 20. Perhaps we could look at trying to gain another top 20 pick via the trade and we already look to be on track. Couple those with the emergence of the others eg. JON, Casserley, Connors, Edwards, Riewoldt, Meyer, Collins etc. By years end more senior and mid range players not up to it will be shown the door, allowing the list to prosper.

Yes I have been negative so far, and have bagged a lot of players, most worthy of it, but after putting some thought into our situation, it seems WE ARE heading in the right direction, and it’s time RFC supporters, showed PATIENCE and heaped the blame squarely on the players and not the coaching panel. For too long most players have been spared of the blowtorch, but things have to change.

I for one, do see a bright future, but for now we have to put up with a bit of mediocrity to see the rewards. For so long the media has fed on our supporters frenzies because as many have noted we sell papers. We are passionate and love our club, and without doubt have the most loyal supporters, who now have to show some patience as it is most required.

Yes, I recently bagged Wallace and his motives, but have tried to look at the bigger picture, and see what he is actually trying to produce. I actually haven’t been this excited about finishing bottom for a long time. May sound mediocre, but sometimes a step back is worth a sprint forward!!!
