Bill James said:Is it just me or is Paul Rois a dominating patronising jerk on league teams. His idea of involving the other panelists is to say their name, Derm, in mid spout. Or ask a rhetorical question Jonno?

MD Jazz said:Yeh, was a great player but overrated coach.
On the breakfast show they were talking about how Bolton has had to develop the blues defensively, along the same lines as Roos did at Melb, to stop the blowouts. Not pretty football etc but effective. And they were raving about the ability of Roos to turn Melb around, that he added steel etc and stopped the blowouts. Roos ave losing margin in his first year at Melb was 36Pts, in his last year it was 33.5Pts - a massive 2.5Pts difference.
Yes, he lost less games in Year 3 against Year 1, but he lost 8 of his last 13 games. And that was with some young talent. Not sure he is the coaching messiah many think he is.

as a player .....front runner who never and I mean never play his defensive role for the teams he played for in his life.........he was the loose man in defence prototype
Absolutely correct MD. And wasn't most of his wages when coaching Melbourne coming from AFL House? I guess most of us on this site would knock back a 1.2 million dollar coaching gig as well :spinMD Jazz said:Sorry but that is just wrong. Was a star at Fitzroy a genuine star. A marking CHB who stopped his opponent and provided great drive.regular vic state player and captain I think and should have won a Brownlow.
As a player was fantastic, Fitzroy team of century.

On his coaching I've always thought he is probally the main reason we went from arguably the most entertaining footy played 90s-00s to the soccer/ basketball style ultra defensively inspired footy that Roos/ Lyon bought into the game that became so ordinary to watch. Little doubt he was able to get the most out of most if his players and had a very good win/ loss ratio at the Swans, however as been a great advertisement too the game , IMHO his been poor. I think it's 20 plus seasons of Roos and Lyon coaching for just the 1 flag , been some pretty good lists at there disposal in that time.
No doubt he is a good coach, however besides the fact I'm not a fan of the bloke himself, I still think he's overrated as a coach, Clarkson for one has achieved so much more and most media put them on a par.
Got to disagree with you there MDJ, I don't think a coach that hasn't coached a flag deserves to be called great, there no doubt he has done some very good stuff, though the Freo game style has been as poor as any to watch, in saying that it's not there job to be pretty , it's to win.MD Jazz said:Lyon has had pretty average cattle at both St Kilda & Freo. Yes, some good top end, but in 2009 when they lost to the Cats (who were arguably at their all-time best list) Lyon had the following guns in his side:
Sam Gilbert
Andrew McQualter
Zac Dawson
Farren Ray
Clint Jones
Raph Clarke
Our current bottom 6 is arguably better than these guys. Imagine how many pages Sam Gilbert would have on PRE?
He also had Jason Blake/Jason Gram/Michael Gardiner/Steven King/Schneider/Dempster in his side - all no better than decent B grade players.
To lose to an all-time great side by 12 points (incl a goal on the siren) is IMO one of the great coaching feats.
Look at some of the hacks he has had to play with at Freo in the 2013 GF's - Dawson/Clarke/Crowley/De Boer/Duffield/Mayne/Mzungu/Pearce/Spurr/Suban/Sutcliffe - and they lost by 15 pts to a Hawks side at the start of their 3-peat.
Lyon is a great coach, he has played the cards he has had at his disposal. Plays most on a break IMO.

All Premiership teams have role players some even have C graders, the one thing about Lyons teams is he had the time to build a premiership flag, he came up short and left the Saints needing a rebuild, he hasn't jumped ship on the Dockers but he is now gone back to the rebuild, he has some very good talent at his disposal and at the end of this 5 year contract I think will be able to judge if he is either a very good coach or truly a great coach.
