Lyon has had pretty average cattle at both St Kilda & Freo. Yes, some good top end, but in 2009 when they lost to the Cats (who were arguably at their all-time best list) Lyon had the following guns in his side:

Sam Gilbert
Andrew McQualter
Zac Dawson
Farren Ray
Clint Jones
Raph Clarke

Our current bottom 6 is arguably better than these guys. Imagine how many pages Sam Gilbert would have on PRE?

He also had Jason Blake/Jason Gram/Michael Gardiner/Steven King/Schneider/Dempster in his side - all no better than decent B grade players.

To lose to an all-time great side by 12 points (incl a goal on the siren) is IMO one of the great coaching feats.

Look at some of the hacks he has had to play with at Freo in the 2013 GF's - Dawson/Clarke/Crowley/De Boer/Duffield/Mayne/Mzungu/Pearce/Spurr/Suban/Sutcliffe - and they lost by 15 pts to a Hawks side at the start of their 3-peat.

Lyon is a great coach, he has played the cards he has had at his disposal. Plays most on a break IMO.

Gilbert is still playing and Ray was a good player. Dawson did his job and Jones could play as well.

Why did you leave out Raph :)

If Ray played for us he'd have more pages than Brandon Ellis. He was an outside player who averaged less than 10 kicks a game. Good on him though for playing 200 games.

Just because Gilbert is still playing doesn't mean he's any good. Often reminds me of Luke McGuane.

Dawson is and always was average. If you rated FB in any of the years he played he would be in the bottom 3 or 4.

Jones had a period of time he was a decent run with tagger but again, at PRE we'd be calling him a classic list clogger. Who would he get a game in front of in our current setup? Lambert?

Who would these guys replace in our current side? Doubt their injection would improve us much.

Its why I admire Lyon, he had the ability to get the best out of a team despite the individual shortcomings.

I'm not commenting on game style, agree if it was an aesthetic contest he would be near last. And, yes there are always role players. But not as many as in those GF sides.

He had the time to build a premiership list?? He coached for 5 years at the saints? Made 2 GF's. Got them to GF in his 3rd year.

He's a gun.
I suppose it's just a whole different argument on what we all class as Great, guns or duds . Using different sports in Golf an tennis , I'd never rate a player who hasn't won a major as a great. Without woffling on I'd say there's probably 20-30 elite players in the league and a heap of A graders, it's all just about the class and how we rate classes.

How many of today's coaches would you rate as Great MDJ ?

Not sure Raph was much good. Just think as team players they were pretty good compared to viewing them individually.

Yeh, was a great player but overrated coach.

On the breakfast show they were talking about how Bolton has had to develop the blues defensively, along the same lines as Roos did at Melb, to stop the blowouts. Not pretty football etc but effective. And they were raving about the ability of Roos to turn Melb around, that he added steel etc and stopped the blowouts. Roos ave losing margin in his first year at Melb was 36Pts, in his last year it was 33.5Pts - a massive 2.5Pts difference.

Yes, he lost less games in Year 3 against Year 1, but he lost 8 of his last 13 games. And that was with some young talent. Not sure he is the coaching messiah many think he is.
roos is still miles ahead of dimma

Good points CC, but do you rate anyone who has won a golf major as great? eg Paul Lawrie? I think you can get lucky in golf (not so much tennis as you have to win too many individual matches) and win a major once. Although still a fantastic achievement.

In regards to coaches today, I'd rate Clarkson as the best and Lyon number 2.

Lyon IMO is a better coach than Roos & Worsfold yet they have the silverware.

It's all subjective.

I must say I've never looked at at it that way, but hell no MDJ, there's been many one hit wonders win majors, very good point.

I agree re Clarko, think its unquestionable his the best. Agreed it's all subjective

Yup. Used the club as leverage to prop up his coin or whenever he thought they were close to tipping him out. A user and a manipulator.

Compared Essendon to 'loser' Richmond to spur the team on when coaching. Prick.

Yeah, it's extremely complimentary coming from Roos. On the other hand, if you continue potting a team that's reached the GF you're going to lose credibility very quickly.

Hard to reconcile it with that scathing "worst 47 seconds" attack when our team wasn't much older than the Suns'. Melbourne is still making the same mistakes a young Richmond team made. As it turned out, Hunt probably had powder on his lip when he kicked the goal. Match should be stricken from the record.

Heads up guys , Paul's father passed away last week , my family will be attending the service.I grew up with him .
