There has been plenty of recent (and not so recent) criticism of Greg Miller. Some warranted too. However, Phantom raised some good points yesterday ... this is a guy who has worked enormous hours in a largely under-resourced department and paid a personal price.
He hasn’t got everything right (give me a list manager who has) but I cannot believe some of the criticism levelled at him given that most of the arrivals at Punt Road would not be expected at some of the better clubs to be impact players, let alone the ready-made champions we seem to expect.
I have maintained that the 22-29 age bracket wins you flags. You want maybe 15-18 in this bracket and a few either side. Greg is not responsible for that bracket at our club. If you want to blame anyone, blame that numskull Frawley and his merry-men.
Look at Geelong’s premiership side and the age they were at the beginning of the 2007 season (I am missing 2). Those marked (*) were originally drafted before Greg even arrived at Tigerland (2/3rds of the team).
D.Milburn 29* J.Bartel 23*
S.King 28* S.Johnson 23*
C.Mooney 27* J.Kelly 23*
M.Scarlett 27* G.Ablett 22*
C.Ling 26* S.Byrnes 22
D.Wojinscki 26* A.Mackie 22
P.Chapman 25* M.Stokes 22
J.Corey 25* N.Ablett 21
C.Enright 25* J.Selwood 18
J.Hunt 25*
M.Rooke 25
Our window really opens in 2011 (even if Plough should not have publicly stated it). This is a possible list at the beginning of that season. Obviously some players will not make it, others will step up but I think it is reasonably indicative. The point is the number of players in the 22-29 age bracket compared to now. Those marked (*) have arrived at our club under Greg’s regime:
N.Brown 33* R.Tambling 24*
J. Bowden 32 W.Thursfield 24*
K.Pettifer 29 M.Morton 24*
S.Tuck 29* T.Casserly 23*
M.Coughlan 28 B.Deledio 23*
C.Newman 28 A.Collins 22*
J.McMahon 27* D.Connors 21*
J.King 26* S.Edwards 21*
G.Polak 26* J.Riewoldt 21*
N.Foley 25* T.Cotchin 21*
A.Pattison 25* A.Rance 21*
A.Raines 25* D.Putt 21*
L.McGuane 24* D.Gourdis 21*
D.Polo 24*
That is 27 players. The balance would be made up by the 3 next drafts and trade periods.
What has happened has happened. There will be a few ups & downs in the next few years but I’m looking forward to our youngsters developing & forming our next dominant era. There are no guarantees but I think there is greater cause for optimism than others would have you think.
NB: Those not named above on our list now are: Johnson, Tivendale, White, Hyde, Jackson, Hughes, Meyer, Graham, Moore, JON, Richardson, Schulz, Simmonds.
