Pettifer in trouble

The only upside if we do offer him a contract is he may have to go onto LTIL. Elevate a rookie. ie Collard and see what he's got.

Good point. But we have to delist at least 3 players at year end. Tivendale, you would think, is a lock. Hyde? Casserly (surely not)?? Jackson ?? Meyer??

I had Pettifer down as one of the easy ones. Obviously not. :-\

Should have been one of the easy ones

This is staggering news. Pettifer getting a new deal. Two steps forward one step back.

I like Petts too, however I thought this year could have been his breakthrough year. How wrong was I?

I get the feeling he was tradebait if well, but with a knee he is no longer a trade prospect. So it's actually not a bad call to keep him as we would have to pay for his medical and rehab anyway. His new contract would be limited in both pay and tenure and I think he still has something to offer as a depth player who can play at the top level. Poor defensive side to his game and is no Mitch, but he can kick a goal and is a nice mark. We have been quite blessed with injuries this year (Polak withstanding...) and you're not always going to have that luxury.

He's a guy that we have invested a lot of time into and I think a it's good for the social fabric of the club. Good luck with the rehab Petts
breakthru yr in his 8th yr its this kind of thinking that has had us mired in mediocrity. he should have been traded more likely delisted at the end of 04.
pettifer is one who will never get any better why because he has to many deficiencies they are there for all to see including opposition clubs.

The thing is I think Wallace & co. finally saw it as well this year.
That's why I find these current thoughts staggering (as Scooper put it).

That would be a major mistake. We may only have three picks but we may trade for two or three extra picks.

I'm no Pettifer fan but imagine the club would owe him, & anyone in his situation re recent major injury, a duty of care in the recovery/rehabilitation process. Like it or not , club & player are probably bound together for another year.

Regardless of whether or not we re-sign him he will be looked after with medical benefits & other stuff

This was actually the final straw for Miller, he was going to offer a new deal, now he has gone... you may find that things will be different on the Petts front!

Good point, I would hope soo. Shoot I would even do what Geelong did with Gardiner, Playfair and King. Take a pick over 70 for Pettifer. Part of the past, not going to get back.

This is absolute rubbish as it would be Wallace calling the shots on whether to offer him a new contract or not. Like Miller or not, Pettifer's supposed resigning had nothing to do with his departure.

Whilst I agree on the "get what we can" idea, I can't believe that you would get sucked in to thinking that Miller made a personal call on Pettifer and that it was the final straw for him, without Wallace being the one behind the call. Miller would only offer contracts to those that Wallace says he wants kept on. He has made some monumental stuff ups in his time with us but, fair dinkum, he cops flack for heaps of crap that isn't his fault. Wallace gets off lightly on many of these issues IMO.

Agree with most of that Jay-Z but when new management comes in previous promises on payments & contracts may not hold any weight at all. Happens all the time in the business world. I don't think the Pettifer deal was the final straw at all but surely if Wallace reccomends that a player gets a contract then the Miller's of the football department can deny it and in this case that is exactly what should happen.

Agreed. No room for sentiment. He should have been delisted. You can't make one hard decision (get rid of Miller - correct in my view) and be weak on another (get rid of Pettifer).

What happens if Tivendale gets injured at Coburg? Do we keep him as well?

Pettifer said he was assured by Wallace he,ll be at Richmond next year.Nothing to do with what happened to Miller.

There is the issue of the other players and how they would react, whether it would affect morale.

In what capacity? Football Operations manager maybe.

If I played with Pettifer, I'd be disappointed at his poor defensive pressure and lack of tackling. Especially if I'm working my guts out to win the ball or put pressure on the opposition if they have possession of it.

Might be a great bloke, but when you go out onto the field of battle, you want to see everyone committed to the cause. After 100+ games, everyone would know what he's like.
