Petts in the leadership group.

Has Kayne Pettifer done enough to be considered a leader at our club?

You make a good point Griff. But I think you forgot someone by the name of Pavlich who plays for Freo. He managed more goals then Kayne ;)
But Ill back you up in saying that although he isnt my favourite tiger, he is a a player who wins his position on the park more often then not by kicking 1-2 goals, taking 7+ marks and getting his 18+ touches. A decent return for any player I'd say. Although there is still room for improvement im sure everyone agrees.

Ooops. But I did say it was late night research...

One thing Pettifer does have which we are sadly lacking, and that is an extroverted personality. I think the point has been made before (I think TW has made the point as well), but the Tigers have very few extroverts in the team.

These are the guys that get other players pumped up and into the game. Apart from Pettifer and Riewoldt, maybe Richo to a lesser extent, we lack that extrovert factor.

I know this isn't everyones cup of tea, but players prepared to show their exuberance on the field doesn't hurt. I wonder if this was a consideration in Petts appointment?

Look at the first quarter again. Port WON nearly all the first possessions and clearances early on. They got the ball clear and into the forward line. Then they turned it over again and again mostly under little pressure and Geelong's skills rolled them.

And besides that they were very unluck to get rolled by a lazy 119 points.

Interesting post lamby but stats don't show the whole story, they rarely do.

That toughness appears to take a back seat to skill is not really that surprising but champions footballers and premiership sides will have both.

Remember how intimidating Brisbane were in their prime? That doesn't show up in the stats.
Look how big the Cats are now. Sure they have some players with silky skills but they are also not frightened of anyone. Big strong bodies.

When the chips are down that's when the muscle has to be applied.
Skills are imperative but if you lose focus on the harder elements of the game a side won't be ultimately successful IMO.
yep top sides have both skill and toughness few have players who are defensively inept. if they do those players are usually exceptional in other areas of the game.

I think he's a leader type although he's just a player. In fact I reckon it will help his game.

I think Pathetts needs a couple of big bags to shut up the naysayers. a couple of 7s or or an 8. That won"t prove he's a champion but it will prove he's our only small forward (Brown excepted) capable of kicking a bunch of goals.

If he kicked 50 in a game, He'll still have doubters.

Jukes if he kicks 50 in game, it just proves how unaccountable he is. Where is his opponent. And while he is kicking all those goals he is shirking all those tackles and 1%s. Pathetic effort Pettifer. Pull your head in and stop kicking those goals and put in damn it!!!!!

i reckon your right. he is just one of 2 small to medium forwards we have i suppose you could add deledio and meyer and now morton.

i think we can safely say that atm pettifer is in front of both meyer and morton. i would say though going by last yrs lists there would be 35 to 50 smalls medium forwards or players this size who play big chunks of games in the forward line who i would rate in front of pettifer. thats not to say that a lot of them are any good.

as for kicking lots of goals in a game sheesh its not about the goals ive already said he manages the odd good game. but what usually happens when we struggle we need the pettifers to stand up and lead instead they usually go missing leaving the younger blokes to fend for themselves.

and the reason for that has been said a million times in this thread already

seems some still dont get it and i dont think they ever will

Goal kicking is not what has Pathetifer on my hit list. He is a good converter and reliable i give him that that is proven.

Its the fact the guy is soft, selfish , hangs back and takes easy options all the time, lacks a willingness to apply hard defensive pressure, sooks it up and carries on like a brat, and avoids hard contested ball winning situations that has made me never rate the guy.

And if those things add up to leadership material this club is in big trouble.

And none of these facets have changed in his game imo and im am just not a fan pure and simple as opposed to others that are.

But hey ive stated it ad nauseum, im not gonna change change my mind on him 5-6 years has formed that opinion.

I will just have to be in disagreement with many on here on Kayne for as long as he is at the club.

I wouldn't say my opinion on this won't change, but he'd need to do all of those things you list he doesn't for 2 seasons before I'd change my mind.
