On the SCG, Young‘s kicking would be a real weapon. Streaming off the back of the square Buddy and Blakey would be licking their chops. And the Swans do need pace and flair in their back half desperately. It’s a good fit.

Ready to go mid, still a bit light on for weight but can run.

Pick 8 Melbourne select Lachlan Ash
Ash has dash.

2020 will see Ash partnered with Salem on the Dees half back line, where he can use his speed and brave run to propel the ball forward. Look for a more attacking and daring approach with Ash on board.
WIth a good shoe, Ash gets plenty of the pill and uses it extremely well.
Looking at improvements Ash is very outside so doesnt wear footy boots indoors.
187cm 83kg.

Melbourne considered Luke Jackson but decided an undersized ruckman is too big a risk. Its a thin year for rucks so Jackson is largely untested against above average ruckmen. The Dees only have 2 picks in this draft, with a pressing need for run and speed.
Plus they have the pressure next year to help make finals so have chosen 2 players who can be best 22 next year.

Pick 9 Carlton make a bid for Liam Henry...
We are all hoping this does happen and it would be fully justified by carlton to make that bid, Henry is a player thats got alot of class and skill and fills a desperate need for the blues . If i was a blues fan and he did end up at carlton i would be extremely happy with that selection

Pick 9 Carlton make a bid for Liam Henry...

This is Freo's biggest fear, if they can somehow walk away with players at 7 & 10 and still get Henry they have had an outstanding draft and have real list change and reinvigorate the list quickly. Henry and Walters is some serious magic.

We are all hoping this does happen and it would be fully justified by carlton to make that bid, Henry is a player thats got alot of class and skill and fills a desperate need for the blues . If i was a blues fan and he did end up at carlton i would be extremely happy with that selection

Yep, Henry is exactly what Carlton lack, they would be doing everyone a favour and it's about the right spot for Henry.

With pick 10 Carlton select Brodie Kemp. Brodie Kemp is a tall midfielder who became the hero for Vic Country in the National Under 18 Championships when he kicked the winning goal against South Australia at GMHBA Stadium. He has terrifc athletic traits, is strong overhead and really bolstered his draft stocks before he ultimately suffered a season-ending knee injury playing school football. The rationale for this pick is due to his upside and despite the knee injury and pressure by fans and board alike for the club to perform, the opportunity was too good to pass up. We believe Kemp long term will ease pressure from the likes of Cripps and Walsh as a much needed classy tall mid who may be able to switch with Charlie Curnow forward in time as well. We see his type as the perfect fit & need for the club.

Hawthorn are over the moon to get Caleb Serong.

I’m genuinely surprised that Serong got to the Hawks pick. And according to the latest pundits, it’s a real possibility that Serong after being talked about as a top 5 pick all year, could get to 10 in the real thing. Now, this happens every year.

After the actual playing of games, after all the testing, no one likes the obvious. Everyone is looking for the “edge”, the less obvious pick, the one that will make everyone look smarter than the next guy. This year, Caleb Serong is getting that treatment. His body of work over this year gives no reason why he shouldn’t be a top 5 pick. The first thing I really like about Serong is he has a real swagger about him on the paddock. There’s been a lot of talk of him playing like Robbie Gray, I see that a bit. For me he is a Toby Greene clone. Style, attitude and ability. For someone who is only 178cm he is a super one on one player in the air and on the ground. Attacks it at a million miles an hour and with intent. You can play him one out in the goal square and kick it on his head and he will find a way to take it. At 178cm and 83kg, he is a powerhouse. Plays much bigger. And is a match winner, will turn games quickly with. Has magic. But also has smarts, when he pushes up the ground, he sees things that others don’t makes the play that opens up the game. At times he can get too excited and just punt it down the line but when he plays with control he makes the right call. Natural footballer. Football quick, watch him at a stoppage, hands in tight are fast. But hasn’t really had preseasons up until this year due to playing state cricket up to under 16’s. So for me, there is still huge scope for improvement as he gets fitter. Which leads me to the midfield question, can he go through there? I’ve commented before that the days of drafting pure forwards under 188cm is just about done. As the boy does preseasons he will become a mid. Spent most of his time in the midfield this year, his numbers in big games show that he can already play there.

Finals numbers 25 touches per game, as well as four marks, five tackles, five inside 50’s .

And this stat line against WA at the champs, 33 disposals, 10 clearances and nine tackles were as co-captain he won Vic Country MVP and made the All Australian side.

These performances are done with limited preseasons at TAC level, once he gets fitter, he can be a mid. Might start off down forward with bursts through the middle and that’s fine.

I had the Hawks pinged for Fisher McAsey and Luke Jackson. These were the two that I thought would be on the board and also be best fit. Hawks need a ruck and just went and got Patton & Frost to play regular football so the key posts are skinny. Mitchell Lewis showed a bit and is a building block. But then I looked closer at what the Hawks have at ground level in the attacking half of the ground. . An aging Luke Breust who lead the goal kicking with 34 but is a shadow of himself, the next small to be listed is Chad Wingard with 14 and Tom Scully with 12!!! Wingard may get back to his best but is 27 next year and his last three years have produced 24,22 and 12 goals with a spell in the VFL last year. Looks a shadow of himself and that trade is looking more and more ugly. Give me Burton and Xavier Durusma and an extra 300k in my salary cap any day of the week. So all of a sudden the chance to add a Serong, is far too good an opportunity to pass up. Adding a match winner who is competitive, with scope for improvement is a huge win at 10.

And he screams a Clarko type, it's a great fit for player and club.

Pick 12 Port take Fischer McAsey.

Once Serong was off the board a fairly easy decision. After trading out Howard, Port lack a tall defender (currently have no defenders over 193) and in McAsey they’re getting the best in the draft. He’s a great reader of play, a reliable kick and at 197/91 kg is already well on the way to having the necessary frame for a key defender at AFL level and may well feature in a few games next year.

Geelong Josh Worell 195cm / I 've seen everything from 74 to 83kg, he's skinny. Sandringham Dragons

Tough for the Cats with their first pick. The list is again and aging fast. The premiership window is at 11.40 and Tim Kelly leaving pushes that to 11.52. It’s one last hurrah for the Cats and then it’s done. It might even be over next year if injuries hit.

They need everything. But when you look at their players over 195cm, it’s real ugly.

Ratugolea is something, he could be A grade. Could develop into a Corey McKernan type forward/ruck. At 21, he’s a stud. Outside of that you have nothing under 28. It’s ugly. Don’t forget that the Cats traded for Lachie Henderson and gave up the pick that become Harry McKay. Oh wouldn’t he be a nice in here about now. There is a lot of that in the Geelong list. Trades for now in the past, are hurting them now. Chuck Harry McKay in and you have a side that could win a flag next year and be set for key forwards for the next 5. You can have both.

This sealed the deal. Was thinking of taking Rivers but banked on him being available a few picks later. The above made Worell a no brainer. So what is he? An athlete. A 195cm colt who loves to intercept out of the back half. He went forward in the champs and kicked goals but I see him playing down back as that third or second tall depending on the match up. Athletically, for 195cm, he would have few peers in the AFL. Not that far behind Noah Balta. Elite mover. So quick for his size. Not strong enough yet but that’s ok. He’s 75kgs, in 2024 he is 89kg. That’s Nick Haynes/Dylan Grimes size. And that’s what I see him being. But a more attacking type. Worell isn’t as lock down as Haynes or Grimes. See ball, get ball. Reads the ball off the boot very well. Played in the Ruck for Hailebury in school footy in stints and almost played as a tall ruck rover. You could throw him anywhere but ultimately I think he settles down back. Geelong need to show him Andrew Mackie tape, that’s another player he could replicate. Worell represents everything Geelong need, size, ability to kick, athletic and 195cm. These type of players don’t come around all that often. The modern day running 195cm player that you flip forward or back gives a side devoid of young talls huge flexibility. It’s going to be a slow burn in 2020 waiting for him to put size on and recover from the shoulder reco but it’s worth it. I’d love this bloke at the Tigers with our first pick. If he is available on the night, Gelong would be crazy to pass but I can see them going small and looking for players that can contribute in 2020 and it would be huge mistake, with this many picks there needs to be some forward planning.

This pick also gives you the opportunity to push Jordan Clark onto a wing or up into the midfield. If you want to keep him down back, no problem, you know have to super quick intercepting players zinging around your back half. That's a good springboard for the next decade. A small piece of the future is locked up, you can't have enough skilful, athletic players in the back half. This pick just makes too much sense not to happen.

Gold Coast Suns choose...

Will Gould : Height 191cm, weight 98kg

DRAFT ANALYSIS: “Will Gould is a no-fuss, clean kicking key defender possessing all the required traits to slot straight in at AFL level.”
IT HAS been quite the season for South Australian key defender Will Gould. He recently put the finishing touches upon a glamorous junior career with a SANFL League premiership with Glenelg – the club’s first in 33 years. Earlier in the season, Gould was named an All-Australian in the National Championships – his second in consecutive years. He went within seconds of leading SA to victory over Victoria Country at GMHBA Stadium, hammering a goal on the run late in the final term to put the Croweaters ahead. Although it was short lived, Gould was arguably best on ground, tallying 26 disposals, 12 contested possessions, five marks (two contested) and a goal. The unanimous captain of South Australia and skipper of Australia for the AFL Academy’s clash with Casey, Gould’s long kicking, courage and leadership have seen him draw comparisons with West Coast premiership captain and fellow SA country native Shannon Hurn. An old-school country kid with a burly frame and no-fuss attitude, Gould is amongst the most ready-made prospects and, despite an awkward height, projects as one of the more unique talents in the draft pool.

Pick 16 - Brisbane Lions select - Will Day
West Adelaide/South Australia | Defender
06/05/2001 | 189cm | 76kg

the cousin of Gold Coast tall Sam Day has emerged as a likely early selection for clubs placing a high value upon upside and future scope. Commonly deployed as a third or fourth tall defender, given his 187cm height, Will exemplified excellent composure when rebounding from half-back, coupled with a natural ability to read the play and intercept opposition forward entries. Also a precise ball user with either side of the body, Day will no doubt benefit from a summer or two in the gym to fill out his frame before attempting to break onto the senior stage. However his classy movement, polished skillset and aerial prowess make him one of the most exciting medium defenders.
STRENGTHS:
Athleticism
Kicking efficiency
Footy smarts
Rebounding
Upside

Combine Results

2.96 20m sprint
21.2 yo-yo test
88cm running vertical

Combined with Alex Witherden these 2 boys will be fantastic off half back mopping up anything that enters their defensive 50 and will be a weapon in the future learning from the best HBF in modern times whilst he is still at the lions - Luke Hodge

Geelong pick Trent Rivers.

Geelong take Josh Worell as a list requirement that may need some time. The rest of the draft Geelong will look to find players who can contribute early while still filling long term needs.

That’s Trent Rivers. At 188cm/83kg he is ready to go in 2020. Rivers already has the things that I value, time with the ball, poise and smart decision making. Played most of his time at the champs as half back setting up play. You want him with the ball making the key kick. He can do that pretty quickly at AFL level next year. With Worell & Jordan Clark you have three players who could fill spots in the back six for the next 10 years. All are athlehtic and all have high footy IQ and I say Rivers is at the top of those three when it comes to footy smarts. You are drafting him as a back flanker hoping he becomes a midfielder. At the champs he only won 26% of his possession in the contest but back at WAFL colts level spending much more time in the midfield that number jumps to 40%, that numbers suggest he can become that big mid. Put that 40% contested number into his 26 touches and 4 tackles a week as a mid, with his smarts and you can see why people are excited about what he can project into. But he will need to build his endurance. That makes sense considering he has no preseason and didn’t commence full training until March 2019 due to glandular fever.

So you have size, footy smarts and scope for improvement. Not hard to see why he goes inside the first 20.

With Pick 18 Port Adelaide take Cody Weightman. Having lost Wingard and with Robbie Gray now in his twilight years the tricky little fella is just what Port want. In time they’re hopeful that he will transition to being able to play some midfield time too.
