PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Pathetic, Soft, Gutless were words that came to me last night as I saw the Tigers effectively chuck in the game by quarter time.

I'd had enough when I saw 3 Tiger players fly and compete against each other for a mark in our goal square for it to be spilled and cleared.

Before that i watched in despair as I saw Tiger defenders in competitive situations choose to mark and lose against Carlton forwards instead of trying to punch.

And when I saw Simmonds dropping uncontested marks that gave away easy goals ........

Personally, I don't know how much to make of last night.

One side of me says that maybe it was the occassion that overawed everyone and that maybe, over the next few rounds the Tiges will claw it back. Yet being overawed is not a good sign for a team trying to show character.

The other side of me says that what I saw last night was just symptomatic of what was shaping up over the preseason and before that, over the years.

On the radio, both last night driving home and this morning driving to work, there was much speculation about Wallace's future.
I've talked to Terry many times over his tenure at Richmond. He is a lovely fellow. Back in 2004, when he was mooted for the Tigers' coaching role, I went as far as expressing my view to the media that I believed Terry's style would suit Richmond's recovery. But Terry got the job and I thought that, once appointed, he should be given a fair go.
Five years later, i still scratch my head over the Tigers' lack of a consistent game plan, the lack of development in the defensive side of its players' games and the lack of general skills, especially disposal, development.

But I'm not going to single out Terry.
When David King was appointed as an assistant coach back in 2004, he was supposed to develop a breed of toughness & defensive skill that was highlighted by his own performance at North during the 90s.
Year after year, it seems clear that he has imparted nothing of this measure to his Tiger disciples.

Over a year ago, Jeff Bond was appointed as the leadership and culture developer at Tigerland. I must admit that although I was extremely happy that the club had picked such a noted expert as Dr Bond, it did take me aback when in his first Club80 speech, he said two things.
1. That when he arrived at Tigerland, he said he'd never experienced such a high culture & environment. To this, I was stunned and thought, "What is this guy used to?"
2. He announced to everyone there that he was of the old school of leadership and had little time for modrn theories or practices. This I was stunned but thought that it was consistent with him starting at the Australian Sports Academy in Canberra over 20 years ago, prior to the modern theories being developed.
The Tigers certainly looked devoid of leadership and professional team culture last night as they looked like a group of social lads with underdeveloped skills got together to appear on the night.

As for the team,

Well, Morton looked very good.

Most were terrible.

Foley gained 30 possessions, yet almost half of these went straight to the opposition. Clangers in the midfield are just so costly.

Anyway, there's more I could say, but I'm at work and that needs my attention.

Maybe i'll continue later.
There's certainly more I want to say.
