Pick 29: Shai Bolton

When Shai was 1st interviewed when drafted and asked what can he bring I think one of the things he said was tackling pressure. Did he go away from that or just not have the tank for multiple efforts?.

Interesting in the last few VFL matches, after the game the performances guys have Shai & Stengle doing high tempo shuttle sprints before hitting the sheds.

Obviously a move to improve their tank when spent.

Wonder how they feel about the only 2 that have to do the extras, hopefully embracing it.

Dan Rioli was doing the sprints with these two guys also post Willi game

Isn't repeat sprints what everybody always did immediately after playing a game of footy?

Times sure have changed. :beer

If he does play, he simply needs to use his many attributes and do the basics.

I felt earlier in the year in his AFL games, he was trying too hard to take mark of the year anytime he went near a marking contest. He's lightning quick and has great skills, so use those to advantage by getting to and being around the contest.

The move into the midfield at VFL level seems to have helped him quite a bit in being consistently involved in the play. Just needs to bring that to AFL level. Regardless of whether he wants to leave next year or not, it's time to play him now. If he takes this opportunity, who knows what might happen.

Yeah dunno why the club would pass up the opportunity to pick the best available for the side, pump up any possible trade value, and reward strong VFL form with senior experience for a 19 year old just because he may want to leave.

He's showing an ability to run out games that didn't exist before The VFL GF was a good example, albeit 9 months ago.

I just hope he drops the schoolyard footy. Flying for speckies is one thing, but one of our hallmarks is to scramble the ball forward quickly and if he tries to dance around too many tackles he'll hold back the midget tsunami rushing past him.

Agree on both points.

Butler out is disappointing as he is part of the great chemistry in our forward mix but to say I am excited for Shai to have another crack is an understatement.

Hopefully he has learnt from not taking his Rioli chance, I think he thought it was a fait accompli that the spot was his, realizing that he needs to work for it should help.

Super excited to see the improvement in Shai, he has a great month or so in the VFl. While he's a second year player he is still very young, being only a month older than Naish and 3 months older than Higgins.

Be interesting to see if his asked to take over Butlers role or will he play up the ground more like he has been in the vfl

I reckon Shai and Higgins will rotate through the midfield.

Bloody lucky. Unaccountable. Will be found out.
He's earned his spot. His last 5 weeks have been excellent, during which time he's laid 31 tackles at more than 6 per game.
