Player Development

Player development? Tough gig.

Tough gig indeed. But we are not doing well , in fact I don't know if club is worse. A lot of other clubs are doing it well. Until we get better at this we will not become a force.

Maybe it is not development, maybe it is just picking the wrong players to start with. Chicken or the egg theory.

How much influence will Craig Cameron have in picking the players to be drafted? All? some? most?
How much say does the footy dept have?
Is Cameron wholly and solely responsible for player selection?
Is there input from Development coaches?

as long as miller has no say we will be fine. ;)

I read an excellent article on this issue in a NFL draft preview a few years ago.

Essentially what it said is that recruiters tend to blame coaches for poor development when draft picks don't turn out. Coaches on the other hand, have unrealistic expectation of how good players should be before they reach the team and blame recruiters when players don't turn out. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

The interesting thing is for some reason in recent years despite the enormous wealth and sophistication of the NFL, top picks in the AFL seem to be haveing a better track record than top NFL picks, despite the older age of NFL recruits.

I'm hoping the recruitment of Jeff Bond has a positive impact in regards to our players confidence and mental application.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jeff Bond seeks psyciatric help within 12 months.

I reckon he needed it before he started.' No sane person would take on that job

While there's been a bit said about List Management (or lack of), It's obvious that some players on our List either have given up false hope, taken too much time, effort, money, opportunity and we've had bugger-all in return, or these players are still lacking the basic fundamentals, let alone the polish to take the next step.

Some players promise so much but still after 3 or 4 or 5 years have yet to show very much improvement. The questions need to be asked
1. Are we drafting the wrong player? ie.Some have skills but seem to have little desire, or some have the desire but poor skills,
2. Have we the right (enough) people in Player Development roles?
3. Are we prioritizing Player Development?ie enough funding, specialist coaching, specialist numbers/player
4. Enough time and emphasis spent with players needing skills etc outside "normal" training sessions?
5. Medical, rehab, conditioning up to scratch? are players confident in recovery and treatment?

It's just that some of our players are still going through a Development stage 5 or 6 years on, what's missing?
What are your thoughts?

Out of place post I think...I mean how often are we going to beat dead horses?

There is a difference between yesterday and today.

Sure, things have a long way to go before we improve...but siting the improvement or lack of...of players signed 5/6 years ago is sort of pointless.

The development of those players has been done to death on this forum.

I think even Claw would (has?) agree...our recruiting, development, resources are far improved from then.

I really wonder sometimes if people have the patience and understanding of just what a mess we were in and how long it takes to get out...financially foremost...which affects all of the points raised in Wilo's post.

The fact is all 5 of those points are going to be very different in available resources, the execution and personnel in 2008 as opposed to 2002 - 2006.

Let's give the developing resources of the club a chance instead of harping on about the past. Different people are in charge progressively as are different resources available more importantly.

Thought I'd bump this thread, there seems to be a bit more discussion now

Why the hell do players like Joel Selwood, Cyril Rioli, Dale Thomas, Scott Pendlebury, etc etc play well in the first season?

Why can't our first year first round picks?

What the hell is wrong at Richmond, they just cannot get anything right on the bloody field.

After decades of incompetence do we just sit back and give our current footy dept more time when our skills still are well below par?

What is practiced during preseason? Turnovers? Weak tackles? Bad kicking?

As full time professional football players why do Richo and Cleve Highes continually miss easy set shots?

WHY? WHY? WHY?

Our Full forward...sorry half back flank....actually where can we hide him next. Put him in the guts Wallace.

Even Foley (our best young player) did one today with Richo leading and clear (again) he kicked it straight to a north player with 3 other north palayers around him at the city end.
