Had the honour of sitting next to Adam last night as his sponsor and got to know him. Really classy bloke, great representative of the club. Treats supporters with respect and goes out of his way to make effort with them, hell he was out talking me and going and grabbing me a drink. He made time for anyone who came up and talk to them or to sign things etc. Really nice bloke, and a deep thinker.
The parts I can share of our discussions I shall in order to give a bit of a deeper insight into him in the hope of clearing up some misconceptions on here about him by a few...
He had his preseason interrupted straight after Christmas with a Quad strain, that hampered his preparation. Then after playing well in the Collingwood preseason game he developed a strange injury the club has not seen before. They are not entirely sure what it is but in laymen terms it's as if he has torn cartledge up around the two top ribs where they connect into the sternum. Gives him a lot of trouble since and still not 100%.
He said to the Physios this week he feels the best he has felt yet with the injury so hopefully getting over it, but it affects a lot of what he does, especially tackling and the like. He was benchpressing 125kg last year and now he is struggling to press 60kg with it. Coughing and sneezing is a bother as you would expect.
There is more to his injury than that, it's been a serious battle for him, the important thing is it APPEARS he is getting over it gradually now.
Oh and as far as the rejects and the like comments he has copped on here since we drafted him, he was going to leave the year before he did at Port and when he did leave Port last year they had offered him another contract . Williams told him before he left he has been utterly professional and not burned any bridges with them if he wanted to come home. However he was being used to rest both the Burgoynes on the field and only getting 60 mins of game time at best. Their young midfield was going to be hard to break into to boot so he decided to best go where there would be more opportunity.
He acknowledges he works on his kicking and has spent a lot of time on it since coming to the club and talked about the importance also of having confidence and knowledge of your teammates when kicking in heavy traffic where he has mostly played. He feels his kicking is getting better and he's feeling more and more confident with it.
He's been groomed in a half forward / midfielder role at the moment, and mentioned VFL is very different to SAFL so takes some getting used to the different style of game.
He is highly professional, said he doesn't want to force his way into the side when less than 100% body wise and blow his chance. He wants to get in the side and STAY in the side when he does. So will be honest about his injury as it doesn't help him or the club to lie about it. He's taking the time to get his body right, adjust to the changes in the game and position/style he is being asked to learn.
He loves it in Melbourne and has his own place now after previously living with a couple of the boys in Brighton. He is relishing a complete new start and lifestyle, Adelaide was a bit of a "fishbowl" football wise as a local and he is enjoying a complete focus on his career in a dynamic city.
I couldn't speak highly enough about his personality and character from what i could gather, comes across as down to earth, very likeable and professional, he's also a bit of deep thinker.
