PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I'm not the coach, my knowledge of the playing group comes from what I read, and I watch more games on TV than I see live.

So I'm therefore more than qualified to say that my opinion is as football law, and should be taught in schools to kids who want to learn how to do stuff right.

One of our major problems is that we're playing guys way out of position, putting them under pressure, exposing their vulnerabilities to the opposition, and reaping the rewards thereof, viz. regular shellackings from hacks.

Rather than simply whinge like a bastard, I'm prepared to offer a solution. Actually, ten solutions. Read my words and recognise them as the answer to all our problems.

1. Newman must be dragged if he sets foot anywhere near the backline. Is there a forward in the league who hasn't kicked a bag on him? Our players must be given immediate instructions to scissor kick him in the head if he approaches the back fifty. He must rather be played in the midfield, with instructions to drift forward. He's got the footskills to hit forwards, let's put those puppies to use.

2. Krakouer must be fitted with one of those prison collars that electrocutes you if you travel outside of designated areas - in this case, our forward 50. He is not a midfielder. I saw a whole bunch of midfielders playing for the bulldogs on Friday night, and they were different beasts entirely to the ol' Krak. His purpose in life is to use voodoo powers to snaffle freaky-arse goals. Our forwards drop plenty of marks, so there's plenty of opportunity down there for the little guy. He also provides a bit of mongrel to harrass defenders attempting to rebound. We know he can tackle - let's make sure he does it in a part of the field where it helps.

3. Nathan Brown is more useful at full forward than he is in the midfield. We need targets. He's a pretty good one. Let's not waste him up the ground when we have plenty of ball-mules capable of jogging down a wing already.

4. Schulz is more useful at CHB than CHF or FF. We already have a CHF (Richo) and a FF (N G Brown), who are more than capable of booting bags already. What we don't have is an accountable CHB. Schulz is still very young - let's get some use out of him in a position where we are weak, teach him accountability in the meantime, and then, if we really need to, move him into the forward line post-Richo.

5. J Bowden should move his slack arse up to the half forward line and start winning him some useful ball. Schulz can do his current job just as well, but with added hardness and less brain explosions. CHB is a position players get sent to in order to learn how to read the play. Well, we know he can do that now, let's see him put some runs on the board at the business end of the ground.

6. On Friday night's performance, Tivendale must be left in the team. He should be placed ona wing, given the ball, and be allowed to choose whether to deliver to forwards or boot goals from outside 50. He pissed me off last year, but his disposal in the last game was, in a word, sweet. He could teach Shane Tuck a thing or two about delivering the ball low and fast. But hey, Shane could give him a few lessons in not being an outside receiver... still, a team of inside ball winners and no receivers is going to be flogged week-in week-out so screw that.

7. Tambling must be played on a wing. Nowhere else. Not strong enough for the forward line yet, definitely too skinny to play back. His speed is wasted if he has to extract balls from packs. He just needs to be told to have a shot if he feels like it. If he's just left some slow bastard in his wake, is approaching the 50, and sees 3 losers hanging off Richo's arms, then he should just cut out the middle man and torp the aggot through the big sticks.

8. Richo belongs at CHF. Nowhere else. History shows his delivery into the 50 when he marks it 70 out is excellent. He kicks more consistently from further out than from in close. It's harder to double team him when he's further out, and if teams are dumb enough to try, it just frees up more space behind him.

9. Gaspar to the forward line. He can read the play. He can take a mark. His conversion rate is excellent. His hair is cool. And more importantly, we need to break in a new full back sooner rather than later. Thursfield, Hall, McGuane, (Roach?!)... the options are there.

10. Coughlan to tag. Permanently. He's tough, can lay a tackle, knows what the better midfielders are up to, and can take the ball away from them in a contest. His big downside is that his disposal by foot is poor. We have plenty of extractor-types already, we wouldn't miss him around the packs (assuming he gets taken away from them by his man).

So there you have it. Feel free to hit the 'reply' button and agree with me. You know I'm right.
