Sorry this post is kinda long, I've tried to make it reader -friendly.

We are 8 games into 2009

I say momentum for players is important

and we all hear about the optimum age range of 22-28

so I had a look at the stats regarding the team that played Port
----------------------

consider this group of 5 players

Graeme
Cousins
Coughlan
Collins
Nahas

All important players
None played an AFL game last year
------------------------------------

and 3 more players - first game back

Raines - second game 09 (first game since round 1)
Cotchin - first game 09
Pettifer - first game 09
-------------------------------

These four aren't aged 23 yet

McGuane
Deledio
White
Morton

they have had some consistency but all young (aged 21- 22)
-------------------------------------
the other end of the scale

Simmo...over 30
Bowdo ...over 30
Brown...over 30
-------------------------------

so now we arrive at our optimum aged players with a
reasonable amount of games over the last 2 season

Tuck
Newman
Moore
Foley
Jackson
Tambling
Polo

That's 7 guys that would have had enough time
to get going, but not too old, and have played
enough footy over the last 2 seasons.

7 guys.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Outside the team versus Port we have the following
players

Richo (aged 34 and injured)
Johnson (aged 31ish and injured)

McMahon (4 games in 2009)
Schulz (4 games)
King (2 games)
Polak (0 games)
Sylvester (0 games - ever)
Thompson (0 games)
Pattison (1 game)
Thursfield (1 game)

and now the younger guys

Hughes (0 games)
Oakleys (3 games - 12 in 4 seasons)
Riewoldt (7 games)
Edwards (4 games)
Connors (1 game - 9 in 3 seasons)
Hislop (3 games- 10 games in 3 seasons)
Rance (6 games - 0 games previously)
Putt (0 games ever)
Post (0 games ever)
Gourdis (0 games ever)
Browne (1 games ever)
Vickery (0 games ever)
Gilligan (0 games ever)
---------------------------------------

OK so I know I'm not counting Coburg games but they aren't AFL standard.

But if we want to promote a guy over 22 years old that's had even some decent footy time this year then we have two blokes: McMahon and Schulz.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I say we would do better if we had more of the right guys in the 22 -28 bracket that had played the majority of 2 seasons in a row.

I say we are going to keep getting the stick from the other teams until we identify that core group and get two seasons into them.

Therein lies the problem of lack of depth. As they say "a souffle never rises twice" and no matter how many chances you give to McMahon and Schulz, they'll always be pancakes
