What i failed to mention was that Knights has taken over the Bombers and most were laughing at that selection. Former Richmond player, captain and in my eyes a very good player. He single handed kept us in that finals game against, coincidently against the Dons. That first quarter was one of the best games i have seen him play. I think he kicked like 3 goals in that quarter.

So back to my point is we cant compare them as in my eyes Knights was a champion player, hard at it and silky skills. Campbell well i have said my bit on him. Look he was a good player but not in Knights class.

a couple of points.
im not sure bourke was a dud coach. 2 years, 1 grand final isnt a bad record.
2nd point. u say campbells lack of success is a reason to not give him the job, but then say bartlett and bourke were dud coaches. 2 players from one of the most successful eras for any club.

You're right, I shouldn't have used the word dud, but Bourke was ineffective as a coach given the list he had. I was attempting to make the point that a player's attributes are not generally a good guide to their coaching skills.

If I was to look for playing traits that do seem to transfer well to coaching, I'd look for "snipers" or those known for their aggression. Matthews, Sheedy, Clarkeson, Walls, Worsefold, have this in common from their playing days. Thompson, Roos and Williams might not be "enforcers" but they never had the reputation of being soft (deserved or not) like Campbell has. Roos is the only modern coach I can think of that didn't have Grand Final experience prior to becoming a successful coach.

I do think being a part of a successful culture is extremely important but that doesn't mean that the candidate shouldn't also have the requisite skills and support at the club.

If I was looking for the perfect coach he would be <45 yo, Premiership captain who has been reported a lot in his playing career and has served an apprenticeship at a successful club. I just don't know who fits that.

Been awhile sinse i have posted on here so here goes. Wayne Campbell is not for us thats clear the only way i would want him as coach if there was no one else that would apply for the position. I would rather B1 and B2 on here as Senior coach before Campbell ;)

I liked Campbell as a player and when speaking about the game he sounds like he does know his stuff, but if we get this appointment wrong then their is every chance we won't see finals for ten years.

Get this wrong and we may not have a club in 10 years.

agree, we have survived 17-18 years since "Save our Skins" - how long can we remain viable with no sucess?

I think you underestimate Richmond supporters.

A club like Richmond can survive without sustained success. Look at clubs like North. They have had premiership success in the time we have been crap and have still been in financial trouble in recent years. Success on the field doesn't always mean a secure future.

But it helps.

Sure - but IMO this next decision is critical - it may not cause our demise but it could impact on where we play our home games in 5-8 year time (i.e. being forced to *smile* ourselves interstate ala Hawks in Tassie) ... I still believe we are a sleeping giant - we just need a little bit of success to awaken... We haven't played two finals series in a row since....yes, the 1970s!!!!! (1974-75)

Exactly what I was thinking, it goes without saying, if we improve as a club our memberships have the potential to break further records but continued mediocrity on-field has the potential to make many members shy away.

The club from next year is at the croassroads.

this is the most important decision in 20 years at the club, we cant afford a train wreck that campbell is. if he is appointed richo, bowden and brown will have a chance to be there in 2010.

imho this is the main issue. anyone who has the balls to force richo into retirement is the one who must be appointed our 2010 coach. i can't see campbo making this call.
